I've lived on Maui 20 years and I'm still coming to terms with the music. The ukulele, the falsetto singing, the steel guitar, and the ubiquitous slack-key (Hawaiian style open-tuned guitar). The source, the man, to most folks here is Gabby Pahinui. I'd recommend Hawaiian Slack Key Vol II, technically amazing, but this is that syrupy sweet stuff heard in airports and hotels for years, and it's impossible to listen without all the kitsch associations. It may be these associations with pineapple knickknacks and tourist hard sell that get these CDs shot at and melted into ashtrays with little holes in the bottom. I don't listen to much Hawaiian music, but one old 80's slack-key and falsetto group that melts me every time is the Hui `Ohana (Ledward Kaapana, Nedward Kaapana, Dennis Pavao) - Either their self-titled album or the one called "Hana Hou". Mmmm! To have a look and listen, check out http://www.mele.com/ , the most complete online Hawaiian music store. Dan
