At the risk of making too small a thing of Dunn's contributions or those of drummer Ches Smith, it's guitarist Mary Halvorson who's really going to turn heads on the new Trio Convulsant disc on Ipecac, 'Sister Phantom Owl Fish.' First time I heard her at the Irving Stone tribute, it was as if someone put a Joe Morris record on a turntable and spun it backwards. This one's not much like that at all: Halvorson's general flow is often like Morris, but her heft is far greater. Mary packs some impressive rock splatter here. Probably going to be a fun band to catch live, too. Breaking up the density, the album also includes also a very lovely bass-and-harp duo with Shelley Burgon, who plays a gig with Dunn at Barbés in Brooklyn on August 4.

Subject: 1st Trio Consulvant album
I'm probably responding too late .. but the first Trevor Dunn Trio Consulvant album "Debutantes & Centipedes" is great . ..it's the Melvins play jazz ...which is a horrible oversimplification, but a bit apt. ...Adam Levy (Nora Jones's guitarist) does some phenomenal work. I talked with him years back when he played with Joey Baron. He talked about being really proud of the album . .he said it was "definitely Trevor's incredible composition" but that he really liked the way it came off . .
