I saw El.Mas. last night in Brussels. Quite an intense performance, as always. I really liked the double-drummer assault (plus the percussion). Ikue Mori contributed some nice electronics and Ribot didnt play as much as I remember him playing last time I saw them; my impression is that Saft contributed quite a lot this time. Overal, plenty of frantic moments and with some nice jump-cut parts. Compared to their show in Den Haag last year, this show left me less of a "Miles-Davis-70's" impression and a stronger "game-Zorn" feeling. And it is always so nice when they get back to a familiar masada melody after creating havoc! My problem is that my recollection of the day is the train trip, which lasted four times longer than the show, rather than the concert itself. manolis

speaking of ikue, can anybody comment on her "100 aspects of the moon"? i'm very curious about it.... martin np. scofield "enroute." sco is blowing my mind on this one, with steve swallow and bill stewart. he's got that tart funky thing going at times, but also spins some long postbop lines (CD starts off with the bop chart "wee").... at least one list member who's opinion i respect doesn't find much to praise in scofield. is that view widely held here?

>Does Ikue Mori in fact always sound the same? i was never a fan of ikue when she was just doing drum machine, but as has been said she switched to laptop years ago. all of her sound sources, however, are still her drum machines. she doesn't always sound the same any more than cecil taylor or derek bailey do. she certainly has her own language and is easy to spot, but if you have the opportunity to hear her play often and with many different people (as i'm fortunate enough to), you learn her language. i really think she's one of the best improvisors in new york. kg np: wfmu _________________________________________________________________ Is your PC infected? Does anyone else think that Mori's whole shtick works great on paper, but not in practice? I mean, the idea of using drum machines to make music was great, but instead of using analogue drum synthizers, with their wealth of tonal possibilities, she always used those really horrible, gated-reverb 80's sounding digital drum boxes. andrew
