Hello. I'm heading off to Beijing later this year and I'm looking for recommendations related to music etc. Is there any avant garde scene there? As think that both Zorn & Eye, Ruins, Otomo Yoshihide and others have toured there so something must be going on... somehwere... Any clubs, galleries or? If any of you have been there, know anybody doing interesting things there and anything else that might be helpfull, please let me know... Thanks! To clarify- it's not a rumor, it has been officially confirmed. Wilson and Van Dyke Parks have reunited and are going to do it. The only question is whether they'll be editing together the album out of the hundreds of hours of studio tapes, or actually recording new material with new musicians (like the Wondermints, Wilson's wonderfully-authentic current backing band). Also, it's not a "reissue"- "Smile" has never officially been completed or released, which is part of the major buzz and hype - "it's finally going to be finished and released." There are excellent bootlegs like the classic "Sea of Tunes" boot or the mp3 one from "Ryan's Smile Page" - both of those are of such quality that they could be officially released and marketed. I just downloaded the live recording from the 2/20/04 performance of "Smile" in its entirety in England, and it's amazing- I was expecting it to be a big flop, but Brian and his backing band are truly in top form, and are more than doing the material justice. It sounds just as fresh, vital, and full of ingenuity as the original tapes do. andrew

The Herzog/Kinski boxed set was supposedly out of print in North America, but I've seen some copies floating around lately, so maybe it's back - as it should be. It really is well worth the price, as all the single films were usually running between 30 and 40 dollars canadian. The box is definitely one of my favorite DVD purchases of the last few years. The commentaries offered by Kinski on most of the discs are insightful and wonderful. I really recommend it. While I love the scores by Popul Vuh for Herzog's films, can anyone on the list reccomend other albums? Thanks a bunch. In the UK there is a new box set of Werner Herzog films just released. All the movies he made with Klaus Kinski plus a documentary he made about Klaus Kinski ³My Best Fiend². That¹s Fitzcarraldo, Nosferatu, Cobra Verde, Woyzeck and Aguirre Wrath of God with the documentary. UK Amazon has it for GBP29.99. Sounds like a great deal to me. Richard Gardner
