Hi, I'm wondering if this has already been discussed, I hope no. Lately, I have seen amazing japanese films with delightful music. I'm wondering what do you think of the soundtracks genre and your favorite albums or composers. In case of Morricone I purchased sometime ago il malamondo/la tarantola del ventre nero. The first soundtrack was ok but I loved much more la tarantola. I also like Krzysztof Komeda, the stuff on tzadik by Ribot ( I'm going to buy Ikue Mori B/Side, what about other filmworks to pick up on tzadik?), Nino Rota or Jerry Goldsmith's Chinatown. Art et al, Napoli 23 is a pretty stunning group. The album shuttles between electro-acoustic improv, with the laptops of Hilmar and Skuli going full bent against viola and percussion, to soundscapes, to a gorgeous and pretty straight reading of a Bhajan, followed by another Indian thing, this time a loopy phrase which is used as the jumping off point for percussion and laptops to make a bit of a mess (sounds like bagpipes at one point.) I highly reccommend it. It satisfies a lot of my different tastes all at once, and with dramatic Icelandic scenery on the box. I got mine in Reykjavik at 12 tonar, and I think they mail order: www.12tonar.is. A fabulous shop: I went in and asked a question, and the guy sat me down on a couch in a side room, poured me espresso and gave me a stack of Iceland's finest. Go there if you're a music fan or a fan of buying records. He told me Napoli played there the previous month and that they were absolutely devastating. The first volume, called Book of Horizons, has Danny Heifetz, Eyvind Kang, Shazad Ismaili, Willie Winant, John Merriman (Cephalic Carnage), Ches Smith, Jesse Greere, James Goode, Youri Raymond (he was in Cryptopsy, but don't repeat that), Timb Harris, Tim Smolens, Jason Schimmel and a whole bunch of orchestral musicians, plus Trey Spruance, of course. Yeah, plenty of Trey Sprunce, who says that Secret Chiefs 3 can now be called a "band of bands"-- not just because the overbearing screwball pseudo-religious tone that became a part of the Hollywood propaganda machine in post-war America still just pulls him in (as evidenced by SC3's huge orchestral arrangement on the theme from Exodus), but also because there are seven configurations of the band on this album. All Secret Chiefs 3 efforts are enormous, of course, but this one traverses the highlands of musical tonality and orchestration that are normally reserved for people who died over 20 years ago, and it plunges deeper into grindcore death black metal hell than any slumming jazzbo wuss would ever dare-- deeper, in fact, than many metalheads could handle, really. Though Spruance anticipates that these will be considered irreconcilable contrasts by most, no true Death Metal fan could consider SC3's death metal band to be "false metal" or remotely wimpy, nor could a Messiaen scholar deny the depth of harmonic interplay in a "band" like the Electromagnetic Azoth (at least his students and the psychedelically inclined would respond to it). Their surf rock band is certainly far from sounding like it's kidding around and being kitschy (which might be a problem, actually), and their signature Persiaphile / Central Asia-o-phile / Arabophile band pretty much puts that good-old supra-sensory paste of the Overwhelming Ancient Irrational on top the whole thing, which many seem to assimilate as an emotionally stimulating experience. Recently picked up Ennio Morricone's "Gli Occhi Freddi Della Paura" ("Cold Eyes Of Fear"), and needless to say, I absolutely love this soundtrack. In this man's opinion, this album really seems to be very influential to Zorn and his Naked City Works. Like I said, that's just my opinion, but I'm curious to see if any other Zorn Listers feel the same way, or at least, somewhat agree with that take on this particular Morricone Soundtrack. At any rate, it's a bad-ass album, and should be considered for your catalog. As far as Krzysztof Komeda, I don't have any of his soundtracks. I do have a copy of Tomasz Stanko's "Litania: Music of Krzysztof Komeda", which I also enjoy. Tomasz's tone on this album is really dry and rough, and a lot different than what I would expect from Manfred's ECM label. The lineup is stellar, and I'm sure, Tomasz greatly enjoyed putting together this album, considering how close he and Krzystof were. On a side note, thanks to Zorn-listers who recently recommended, Tortoise's "TNT" and DNA's "Live at CBGB". Picked those up over the weekend, and they've been in heavy rotation on the CD player. Here are my recommendations for the list this time around -- Power Tools - "Strange Meeting" (Bill Frisell - Melvin Gibbs - Ronald Shannon Jackson) Henry Threadgill - "Where's Your Cup" Oh, also, Ornette Coleman plays San Francisco, March 20, with his son, Greg Cohen, and one other bass player (who's name evade's me at this moment Tony Falanga??). It's part of the Spring SFJazz Series, which will also include Paul Bley & Satoko Fujii in April, and one of the most underrated saxophone players Gary Bartz in June. European Zorn-listers, please keep us posted on Jazz Festivals this spring/summer, as I'm beginning to plan my trip to Europe in '04. M'kay, sorry for the lengthy-off-topic-rambling email, but it's been some time, since I've written the list... didn't want you to think I didn't care anymore. Have a very metal weekend. Duke 40 CD set

I have a slightly different experience with the Duke set than the Jazz Doc describes (copied below). The difference is I have personnel listings and dates for all of the tracks, in the inserts in each of the 20 CD cases -- as well as a medium length bio. This basic studio info is something I, like many, have a fetish and fascination for. Otherwise, mine is the same. Same title, with the subhead, "The Complete Works from 1924-1947." Label is "History," manufactured in Germany. 20 2-CD jewel cases (each with it's own title), packaged in an unfortunately thin cardboard box -- the box is competently decorated but it's almost impossible to get a CD out without tearing a corner of the box (because the cardboard is so thin and the fit, so tight). Jazz Dr -- Did you check the insert booklets in the jewel cases? Since everything else is the same, it would be odd if that was different. Martin NP. The Duke, The Duke Steps Out (the 7th and 8th discs of the set) 1929-1930 JazzDr(a)aol.com wrote, in part: it was titled "The Duke: Edward Kennedy Ellington and His Orchestra" [IMPORT] [BOX SET] . The quality of the music is excellent, the box it came in is barely adequate more like paper than cardboard, and the liner notes are less than a bare minimum. Not a hint of where the tracks originated or who the players might be. That aside it was worth every penny!
