Not to mention the fact that 'Friends and Neighbors' has been available on CD from French BMG for a couple of years. I bought it at Tower; it wasn't even particularly expensive. It's my understanding that Ornette himself has the rights to his Impulse! recordings, which is what has prevented Mosaic from undertaking a box set (which arguably could contain 'Crisis,' 'Ornette at 12' and the unreleased 'Sun Suite of San Francisco,' with a couple of documented rarities from that period to "finish" it off). It's in Ornette's hands, apparently, though presumably the questionable nature of his current relationship with Verve must surely enter the picture. Steve Smith ssmith36 at sprynet.com

Ornette Coleman - Crisis

The latest issue of the Wire has a feature entitled Great Lost Recordings. The chosen album for Ornette Coleman is "Friends and Neighbours". I have written to the Wire saying that "Friends and Neighbours" is OK but that the real legendary lost recording is the wonderful "Crisis". Surely that rates as an all time Great Lost Recording by any artist? Is anyone on the List able to throw some light on the gloom of myths and legends as to why this has never made it to CD? I remember, a few years ago, David Wild said that Impulse! had lost the copyright back in the seventies. Presumably it would go to Ornette but as his re-releases are on Verve which is part of the same company why hasn't it emerged? I love my vinyl original copy but it would be good to have a brand new copy without the surface noise and perhaps including the rest of the concert. Any thoughts? Richard Gardner

Saxaphone and tablas

Hello, Im hoping the Zorn list can help me on this one... I recently heard an unidentified piece consisting of only saxaphone and tablas ( or some other hand percussion). I have no idea who either of the musicians were, but i was totally blown away by what I heard. The saxaphonist was playing within a "free" context and using a wide pallet of screeches, skronks, ect. Does anyone have any idea what it could possibly be? Hemphill

itÂ´s a very good release. ThereÂ´s a long suite for sax sextet in 3 parts and a nice trio piece for clarinet, cello and percussion - the highlight for me. The CD is starting with a string quartet - really unusual for Hemphill. IÂ´m a great fan of his and this is a great addition to his output.
