Analysis of "The Gift"

Hello, Im new to this list and only recently have discovered the music of John Zorn and a few other NY downtown musicians, so Ill be the first to admit that I feel a bit as if Im just pulling out my crayons while most others here are polishing dissertations. Oh well, Ill learn. First of all, I love anything that is a challenge. Which is probably one big reason that Zorns music catches my attention! Love it or hate it, the music cannot be ignored. For frame of reference, I own The Gift, Masada Guitars, Bar Kokhba, and the first two I bought Naked City and Radio. Im interested in hearing your thoughts about the albums concept. The music heard appears diametrically opposite to the enclosed images (except the blue-toned image of the girl who is either giving or receiving a bolt of energy in her body I find that image rather intriguing). Maybe Im completely off-base in my analysis, but I also think that one of the beauties of art and music is interpretation. We each infer what we wish that invokes meaning in our own lives; thus our interpretations are really only opinions with no solid facts to make anyone right or wrong. Heres what I think: the music is being conducted by the Pied Piper. Yes, it is wife friendly (I just read that term here and had to laugh!) seemingly soothing and innocuous. There are no loud sax or voice interruptions SCREAMING at us to pay attention. All outwardly appearances of sound alone give the impression of a benevolent, gentle CD to spin by the roaring fire in a log cabin in the company of that special someone. But the clever Piper leads us elsewhere. We start off with a lovely CD cover. Inside, extremely thought-provoking and disturbing images, then we hear what is anticipated by the appearance of the cover. Its as if the images are sandwiched between the giftwrap of superficial beauty and innocence. Yet, as the CD progresses, those easy sounds almost give hints of something just seems a bit too perfect and an explosion may erupt at any moment. With the song Cutting Stone, I start to get the feeling that the perfect surf world that has been created in previous songs is starting to make waves. Next song La Flor del Barrio is so slow that its as if Zorn is saying, Hey, calm down, not to worry... Then he taunts and slightly jolts us again with Bridge to the Beyond. Thats when I felt the strongest connection to the images and the entire concept was realized. The concept being that behind the unchallenging, almost mind-numbing music that we take for granted everyday lies disturbing facets that one day may seize us and take us prisoner if we dont keep guard. The CD finishes with a reprise of Makahaa, a gentle tune in which the Piper returns his kidnapped disciples with a warning to remember not to close our eyes to that which we may find disturbing in life. Did anyone have thoughts even remotely similar to these, or are yours completely different? Regardless, Id really love to hear your thoughts on the concept of the CD. i need some help: one of my favorite records right now is the Lucky Stars "Hollywood & Western" relased on Ipecac some 3 years ago. here in Norway, it's damn hard to find out anything about music like that (if i talk to any music-store clerk here, they all think i'm out for some Garth Brooks type shite). so i'm wondering if anybody here can recommend some old country & western music like that. i'm not looking for modern country, cuz i hate that stuff but i'm talking old 50's, 60's country & western. take care, kevin.

There were some songs with Haino and the koto player that were not at all in the style of "vintage era" Pain Killer. David K.

Electric Masada last night

Anybody else catch the show at Tonic last night? It was my first time seeing them. They played hard, but they had a different line-up than usual - missing Medeski and with a young guitar player I'd never heard of named John D... something -- I didn't catch his name -- does anyone know who he is? I liked a lot of his playing, though I wish I knew what they sound like with Ribot. Somebody the other day mentioned a Miles electric sound, and I definitely heard that. I got the feeling they weren't in top form last night, maybe due to the new guitarist. Can any of you connaisseurs provide a broader perspective? Paul

Hamid and Melvins and Nels

Hey - I think Hamid will more than hold his own with Painkiller- I was listening to "THe All-Star Game" with him/W. Parker/A. Silva/Marshall Allen and Kidd Jordan (newly released on Eremite) last night and thinking how 'rockin' Hamid's playing was sounding in parts (BTW the whole album is superb). My suspicion is that he will fit in very well and that Painkiller will be in top form. On another topic - I was planning on buying the Melvins - Gluey Porch Treatment that was released a couple of years ago (with a bunch of bonus demo tracks). But I notice that the entire album is also included in the CD issue of Ozma by the band. Any rec's on which one to get (e.g. is Ozma better than the bonus demo tracks, is the sound better on the reissue etc.)?? Thanks for any info. that anyone can provide. Listening to Nels Cline Singers - Instrumentals right now - GREAT! Mike
