I was also very surprised not to see *any* posters up around Amsterdam advertising the gig, which wasn't sold out. You couldn't move for the generic Holland Festival posters though. Zorn said at one point that a sample that Horvitz was using was the sound of Horvitz's little girl when she was three (I'm paraphrasing). I don't know how old she is now, but I assume that means that at least that sample is an original. At least the advance in technology meant that Wayne didn't have to spend ages between each song loading new samples in! Thanks, Maa Meeshkaa Moww, for the setlist. For those that weren't there, Inside Straight was the last number of the main set, followed by the last two songs. Not quite the 40 minutes of encores that Zorn promised us...but I'm not complaining. However, I did feel slightly deflated after the gig. Maybe I'd expected too much. I think my main problem was Frisell's playing (often too quiet and a bit duff throughout) and the choice of material. GG Allin

I can't offer any big insights, since I never bought anything of his and didn't bother to go to the Orlando show (where he got arrested and nearly got a club closed, by pooping on the stage if memory serves. But I did get to hear some country music that he recorded, which was surprisingly good and apparently unironic -- and you've never have known it was the infamous Mr. Allin. Tjis was courtesy of Paul Reller, an associate professor in composition at the University of South Florida who had done some recording with GG and let me hear it -- I don't recall that it was ever pressed, I think I heard a cassette. Reller used to be in a band called Clang, and if you ever come across one of their releases in a bargain bin somewhere, it's definitely worth picking up. The group included two Eastman grads (guitar and keyboards) and two self-taught rock musicians (the rhythm section), an interesting combination, and they had a bunch of very hummable, very danceable songs. It was always fun to watch people bopping along to the tunes at shows and not paying any attention to the lyrics, which tended to be pretty twisted. Parry

Hi! Anybody know the story of how Chadbourne hooked up with Black? Or where I can find it? As far as I remember, it was something about Black had pretty much dropped out of the music bussiness and was working as a carpenter down south with another former Zappa musician or something like that, right? How does Naked City 2003 compare...?

Hey, I was wondering if anybody saw both the Naked City 2003 show and the recent performance of "Torture garden" material by a Wayne Hortvitz group and how they compare. Also I think there has been other Naked City cover projects. Do the real group still do it better?? I was also kind of curious if Wayne Horvitz digged out all those old samples or he did something new? Did he really have them lying around fro ten years? They are pretty important in the Naked City sound, especially Torture Garden stuff. Actually I hope they will somehow keep playing and do some new stuff.
