My good friend recently switched to bass after frustration with guitar. He would like to know about players who play interesting/intricate bass parts on electric bass. He is looking for rock players, but experimental, free improv, jazz, etc would also be useful. Thanks. Zach

I'm sure this list would be drastically different if we knew that Zorn read it. Different still if he was more than a lurker and actively participated in the conversation. I can't say if different would be better or worse, but it seems that opinions can be expressed freely if no one stands to be personally afronted by comments. Negative comments in regard to Zorn's work would probably be sugarcoated or stifiled if the man was a presence on the list. Zorn would be a fool if he read this list, IMHO. At least we doesn't discuss him too much. That's the great thing about the list. Zach

For rock/jazz/funk gymnastics there's Victor Wooten (one of the Flecktones), Gary Grainger (esp. on Scofield's "Blue Matter"), Nathan East (saw him live with Clapton once and he played half the guitar solos on his bass), Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), Geddy Lee (Rush), Chris Squire (YES), Muzz Skillings (Living Colour), Doug Wimbish (ditto, plus Tackhead), the guy from Fishbone (forget his name -- John Norwood Fisher?), Andrew Weiss (Rollins Band, this guy is Flea's favorite bassist), Billy Sheehan (Talas, the self-proclaimed Eddie Van Halen of the four string), Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath), James Jamerson (tons of Motown), Fernando Saunders (jaw dropping work with Lou Reed), Stu Hamm (worked with Vai, Satriani and other shredders), Mike Bean (did an album with Vinnie Moore, this guy is amazing and very few people have seen or heard him), and of course Flea and Claypool and Pastorius as others have mentioned. The Flaming Lips' Michael Ivins. Original music label

Hi, Anyone know if the label "Original Music" still exists? They specialize(d) in African music. In particular I am looking for a compilation titled "African Elegant" that had Kru/Krio Sierra Leonian calypso-type music. If the label or disc are long gone and anyone has a copy they are willing to copy/part with, that would be great too. Oh, and New Yorkers, I hope you all check out the Trevor Wilkins show at least occasionally, it's all calypso saturday and sunday nights on one of the public stations, i forget which one.
