I had the chance to catch Michael Moore last night supporting his album "Jewels and Binoculars" the music of Bob Dylan. With Michael Vatcher on drums and Lindsey Horner on bass. These guys play well together, all top notch players! I thought Vatcher was outstanding in person. I spoke to him about Spy vs. Spy, and he had better things to say than Tim Berne. M. Moore said the ICP Orchestra would be touring the States soon, but I suggest you catch this band if you get a chance. I think available Jelly and the Clusone 3 are still my favorites, but "Jewels" is well worth a listen. It has actually hit "mainstream" jazz radio here in Rochester. Is Songlines magazine still distributed in the US? >John Cage Silence Plagiarism Case Settled If anything calls into question the basic assumptions of 'intellectual property', this does. I doubt Cage would've been too vehement about ownership. It seems that part of his schtick at that point was deflecting culpability from the body of the composer. But I guess he didn't see that information was too valuable a component of matter for the profiteers not to want their cut, so once he informed recorded silence with a specific meaning (or at least parameters for interpretation) it became a commodity. With Zorn's game pieces there seems to be a movement away from compositional identity, yet Cobra, as the culmination of this approach, paradoxically retains a certain formal or structural cohesion that marks it, regardless of the personalities involved. After inquiring at the HOLLAND FESTIVAL 2003 organizers about the potential appearence of mr Zorn here, I got the following reply: "In fact we are working on a portrait of Mr. Zorn, so please check our web site to see the definitive program next Spring" I think this sounds pretty promising for us euro-zorn-fans.
