You can find a fair amount of Chinese music on Emusic.com, along with a ridiculous amount of: classic jazz (coltrane, thelonius, blakey) traditional jazz ( basie, ellington, django) free jazz ( ayler, ornette, etc) contemporary jazz (Ken Vandermark, Gregg Bendian) reggae electronica old classic country soul (Stax Volt Chess) world music (indian, pakistani, persian, latin american, mediterranean) etc etc etc etc i highly recommend this site. i've turned on many friends and family members to Emusic.com and they all thank me profusely. And the artists get paid! :) Paul Escamilla

re: prog rock

I was a huge fan of prog rock back in the day. The Yes Album was my very first album purchase, I believe, back when I was all of 10 years old! Under the influence of my older brother, I became a Yes freak, and also developed a great love of Genesis, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, and Jethro Tull. Never was a big fan of ELP for some reason, though. Not sure why. These days, the only one of these bands i still listen to on a regular basis is Yes. My favorite album is Topographic Oceans, followed by Going For The One. I hate everything after Drama (i.e. from the point Trevor Rabin joined up). My brother and i were initially trained as classical guitarists, so i think that played a large part in our appreciation of the complexity and virtuosity of bands like Yes. I've never really understood the charges of "bombast" and "self indulgence" levelled at the prog bands. True, sometimes some of the bands went overboard. Some of the bands sucked. But I still admire and adore those albums when bands like Yes achieved something akin to a marriage of rock and Western classical music. I remember when I discovered punk rock, though. I grabbed all my prog and classic rock albums, ran off to the used record store, sold them all for peanuts, and used the cash to buy Sex Pistols, Clash, Black Flag, patti Smith, Devo, Ramones, etc. etc. These days, at the grand old age of 36, I've finally come to peace with my love for various forms of apparently contradictory musical genres. Depending on my mood, you'll find me drinking in Yes, underground hip hop, free jazz, indie rock, Chinese classical music, etc etc why limit myself to one cuisine?

<<So my question is have other people rediscovered similar LPs and been surprised at what they found after having been critical of them without listening to them for a long time?>> I still haven't ever really gotten into ELP, but over the past years have belatedly 'discovered' or re-discovered many things that I overlooked in my college 'experimental/avant/improv only' phase: early Allman Brothers, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Slayer, non-'Pet Sounds' Beach Boys (all of the two-fer reissues from 1967-1977 plus the 'Today/Summer Days' one from right before P.S.), some Jimmy Webb stuff, Burt Bacharach (not as unhip recently), ANTISeen ... right on through to a bunch of Lynyrd Skynyrd, AC/DC and Dio casettes I found lying on the street. Plus a lot of older country music, which I have always liked but got sidetracked on (Roger Miller, Faron Young, Willie Nelson, Webb Pierce, Johnny Paycheck). Plus there are some things I never let bother me as far as being uncool, like the first Little Feat album, which I have loved since I was 15 or so... (that being about a decade ago). That said, I'm still going to try to make the trip to Mills College to see Cecil Taylor speak tonight, and have been digging through a lot of Sun City Girls stuff lately. Geez, I don't post these vain 'what are you listesning to' responses often/ever, but somehow felt inspired here...

Still enjoy King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Hatfield and the North, National Health, Henry Cow, Slapp Happy (although whether the last two really are "prog" is open to conjecture, as the right people actually *like* them) and I'm too young to have seen any of them play in their prime. But I did see the 21st Century Schizoid Band (Giles, Giles, MacDonald, Collins, Jaksyk) the other night - and they ROCKED. Mostly. I'd forgotten how good the first Naked City album is, actually, until I played it for my boss in the car yesterday. I had thought that I wouldn't enjoy it anymore, as a lot of the ideas on that record have become almost commonplace in "avant" music circles. But no, it was still great. Emerson, Lake and Palmer

I hadn't listened to Emerson, Lake and Palmer since 1977. Punk on the radio and TV altered what I was listening to and I merrily ventured on that journey from punk to post punk, to jazz punk, jazz and the avant garde and so on. So I hadn't listened to ELP because of the way I viewed that whole prog rock scene from a typically 1977 punk view. However, I was really surprised how much I enjoyed listening to the wonderfully bombastic ELP first LP. I'll have to wait to find their other LPs at my parent's house after my visit. So my question is have other people rediscovered similar LPs and been surprised at what they found after having been critical of them without listening to them for a long time? So does this mean they will be performing a 10 PM show in New York on the 7th and then flying across the entire continent and three time zones to perform an 8 PM show here in Vancouver on the 8th? I'm worried that either something has changed and my show has been cancelled or that when they do get here they will be too tired and jet lagged to perform a quality show. Ken Payne

Frank London´s Klezmer Brass Allstars featuring Boban Markovic Orkestar & Hasaballa Brass Band, _Brotherhood of Brass_ (Piranha) is the brass blowout of all time (or at least this year)! In the spirit of "finally reuniting" Jews, Moors and Gypsies, London has invited the two bands from the Balkans and Cairo, respectively, and they just tear through sixty minutes of crazy dancing pleasure.
