Anything with Joey Baron, of course. I think John McEntire's drumming on Tortoise records is hot stuff, too. And of course this isn't within the last five years, but my top "a boy and his drum set" record of all time is the Minutemen's "Double Nickles on the Dime." Holy shit, it's almost 20 years ago now. I still miss D. Boon. since we are talking about drummers...has anybody here heard of the band (SIC) from minnesota? they broke up over 5 years ago or so, but they were an extremely complex death metal/grindcore and had one of my very favorite drummers Nick Miller. they were like a death metal version of naked city (i say that because of how quickly things changed from measure to measure) and were tight as uh....well...a drum. (pun intended). Nick went on to join Kataklysm for a while, but he definately toned down his playing to suit them. (SIC) only put out one five song EP but it is amazing. Nick also played on the first Anal Blast demo, but again nothing as intense as (SIC). I saw them live about 5 times back when the thirsty whale was still open in chicago and i couldn't believe what i was seeing. any drummer should try to find that EP. I've heard a zillion death metal drummers and nobody even scratches the surface of what he was doing. except of course for joey baron, but hey that goes without saying here i think. my two cents on drummers. -mike

Probably the most incredible metal drumming ever committed to a recording medium. Combined with two custom-built 8-string (!) guitars this should convince a lot of non-metalheads of the genius of this band. Frankco

YES!!!! Double Nickels on the Dime is one of the greatest albums of all time... My favorite "a boy and his guitar" albums for me are any by Black Flag!!! In fact I can't put down my guitar with the new "Rise Above" Black Flag tribute record. While the Gerry Hemingway solo acoustic CD is REALLY REALLY good, it's more than five years old (some of the recordings are from the late 1980s).
