How does that sound to everyone? Totally over the top? Well, it's how I store my own collection!
I think that order and information is a must for the FTP server. I'm a quite "tidy" (or whatever you mail call it) person myself, so I think that's important. About the two areas that you mentioned, Michael, files found on Kazaa (or other file sharing systems) which are in average quality and then encoded to higher quality (OGG then), where should they be put? Files found on Kazaa are mostly at 128 kbps or higher, but there are always exeptions. The Resistor live (which I found on Kazaa) was at 128-256 kbps and many other rare tracks have very good sound. Well, I tend to call it "anal retentive". Don't know if that's a phrase that translates well for the non-English speakers on the list! <grin>

I never, EVER re-encode a file that I find. You will NEVER get any increased quality of sound, and any space saving is minimal. I think it is especially bad to re-encode a MP3 file as an OGG file as they both have slightly different psychoacoustic models, so they both "throw away" different bits of the spectrum. You're just doubling up on the "lossiness" inherent in these systems.

Well, if a lose/odd file has good quality it can be marked as such (something like "Resistor (May Day Live) [256kbps].mp3"), but I'd still keep it in the "less-than-perfect" part of the web site. But hey everyone... Don't think that I'm making up all the rules here! These are just my recommendations! Michael
