I too play by ear, but took 6 years classical piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music (UofT), after the third year, the instructor stopped playing the new pieces for me, she figured out that I was playing the entire song from memory. I was then forced to sight read the music, which takes me forever!!!, But I'm so glad that I can read this language as well, but I havn't played anything for a long time, and my sight reading is a little rusty.
