I use the GNU and I am able to play: DiVX, XVID, MPEG, MOV [even the Sorenson Codec stuff], OGM, WMV.... the list goes on. And no, I Am Not A Wizard.

Because mpeg is public format it would make sense to archive these clips in mpeg format in any case. I have those recycled watch advertisements in mov format but have never been able to play them. MPEG is also very large and problematic. I would rather suggest that if any transfer is to be made, that it be either XVID or DIVX. But it's still a bad idea to decompress a video and then recompress it, since overmuch would be lost in the way of information. There are no ways to "translate" one compression to another format, so a decomp/recomp would be necessary, and, again, this means throwing away more info. And we likes us some of that /un-compromised/ yello qualidad!
