Hi Gang I was just listening to some of Daniel's remixes, courtesy of Jon's website and it got me wondering whether there are any rules about how a remix should be. Probably not - it seems to me that the only rule I can detect is that the remix should contain recognizable elements of the original piece. I would add my own rule as an experiment; start the remix off with a very short couple of bars worth of the original song, then go wild from there. That would seem to provide the listener with a framework from which they would all know and recognize what the artist was doing and would also pay a little hommage to the original artist. Not sure about the legalities of it all, that's another subject. On the other hand, all remixes seem to contain sounds that have been sampled from the original artist so right there already you're playing with copyright issues. Must be OK since everyone seems to do it and the originals - e.g. Yello - seem to encourage it. So, to summarize my musing on this subject, besides putting the word "remix" in the title of the piece there would be this start/end signature of the original piece, plus the use of samples from the original (or melodies, etc redone by the remixing artist on something). Just sharing some of my musings...
Once upon a time, I was listening to a CD containing Drum N Bass "remixes" of Art of Noise songs (previously mentioned in this list). I didn't buy the CD 1. because I was too cheap 2. because I could barely recognize Art of Noise in the "remixes". So your first statement about "recognizable elements" seems to be the most universal one. Now I pose a similar question - it seems sometimes Remixes and Covers overlap. Take for example Red Hot Chili Peppers cover of Love Rollercoaster. That doesn't sound very much like the original! But I wouldn't call it a remix, I still call it a cover. Then there's a Cure cover of a Jemi Hendrix song that I can barely remember because they just totally made a new song out of it.... Cover or remix? Of course a person/band cannot do a "cover" of their own stuff, right? So is that horrible Tom Craft remix also a cover? Just more random thoughts and hopefully I haven't misdefined any words this time.
