Re: [Yello] FTP site, organizing
[ About the two areas that you mentioned, Michael, files found on [ Kazaa (or other file sharing systems) which are in average quality [ and then encoded to higher quality (OGG then), where should they [ be put? Nowhere :-) If you find files in average quality, please do not encode them again at a higher rate - this does not improve the quality. Once the file is created at average quality, you cannot regain higher quality without going back to the original. If we keep good notes on the source for the files, then people can choose between different quality levels for the same song, depending upon how much time they have for download. In other words, if you do have access to the original song, there's no need to delete the average quality version from the ftp server because some folks may not have the bandwidth to download the higher quality version. Of course, this must be handled within reason, because the disk space on the server won't be infinite. [ Files found on Kazaa are mostly at 128 kbps or higher, but there [ are always exeptions. The Resistor live (which I found on Kazaa) [ was at 128-256 kbps and many other rare tracks have very good [ sound. Yes. These encodings offer good sound. We'll take what we can get. Please don't try to improve the quality, though, unless you have the original CD or LP, or an uncompressed file. P.S. I've been looking into "shorten" which cuts the size of a full CD quality file in half without losing *any* quality. See etree.org for Windows, Mac, and Unix versions of the encoder and various players. Realistically, we may not have enough room for many of these, but it is worth considering. My search of the internet shows that this format is rated very highly. Brian Willoughby Sound Consulting

Nowhere :-)
Should have checked for new posts before I made my reply! I've just ended up repeating Brian's words.

Yeah, this may be an option for very rare CD tracks. For vinyl I don't feel that we need to make copies that full preserve all the background hiss! But of course, we should always remember that even CD quality is a compromise. I wonder if we'll see any Yello stuff released, or re-released on "Super Audio CD"? Michael
I have been dreaming of that for years. I hope it happens one day. I would love to see a big box set of all re-mastered material up to Zebra or something. Plus an extra 5 CD's of rare re-mastered tracks. I can dream cant I? On Thursday, November 7, 2002, at 05:01 AM, Thug wrote:
