Do you know of anywhere on the web where one can hear a sample of The Residents' style? I don't have the money at the moment to buy very many albums cold. -Bob ----- Original Message ----- From: Rob_King <RobKing@pigeon.carleton.ca> To: <yello@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 18, 2002 6:55 AM Subject: [Yello] The Residents (was "Dadaism in Dieter's lyrics")
Well, I think we are all forgetting how much of a important influence the Resident's music were on Yello. After all, they did attempt (and succeed) in getting signed to the Resident's label at the time in the early 1980s.
I bought my first Residents CD this past weekend, called "Petting Zoo", released this year. I recommend it to listees who are not afraid of listening to avante garde-ish, odd music. It was a compilation of some of their more accessable work from the past 30 years. Although the music style is a bit different, the lyrics are hauntingly similar in style. That is, they seem to tell 'stories' of sorts, much like some of Yello's output. However, most of these stories don't seem to make a lot of sense (on first listen, anyhow). I will note that none of the Resident's songs on the CD were love songs, so that's one style that Dieter and Boris came up with on their own in later years.
Anyhow, I just thought I'd throw that into the mix.
Cheers, Rob
