The style, design and navigation of the site has nothing to do with U2 being popular. The site is not fancy. It is simple and direct.
It shows that U2 made the site to specifically for their fans. It wasn't built to show off. It was built to give the fans what they wanted.
A website is an outlet for information. It would not cost a lot to create U2's site. Any certified web designer could create it. So it's not about money.
Seems to me the webmaster they hired did not cater to their clients needs and build a website for the fans. Instead of practicality they went for eye candy.

It's a shame.
