Well, according to my 'EAR', the whistler in question is, no question, NOT Billie. The question remains, WHO IS IT? I'm still pullin' that it's Dieter. That reminds me to ask - who's whistling is it on The Rhythm Divine. I had always assumed it was Dieter, until I heard 'Norma Jean' (an early version of The Rhythm Divine), and wondered if Billy Mackenzie was whistling. (Of course it could have been Boris all along.) Anyone have any ideas? I also have assumed that Dieter is blowing past pursed lips here, especially due to the jaunty, up-beat feeling to the sound. Tou would have to go through the Associates catalogue to find a track or two where Billie is whistelling to see if it matches, but I still believe that it is Dieter.
I have just added a couple of short mp3s to my site. The first is a clip of Billy Mackenzie whistling ('Even Dogs in the Wild' from The Associates' first album 'The Affectionate Punch'). The second is a clip from 'Norma Jean' from Billy Mackenzie's album 'Auchtermatic'.
