[ I do however believe that what we are doing is OK. We are not [ trying to make money, we are just sharing what (we have all paid [ for) we already own. I think that you are morally correct, but what you say above is not perfectly true. You paid for the vinyl, so you can only share the vinyl (or sell it). But you cannot share computer files that are copies of the vinyl because you did not buy the rights to do that. You can make a backup recording of your vinyl, but you cannot share your backups, and you cannot keep them if you sell the original. This is pretty much what the copyright laws say, or at least that is how I interpret them. Your ownership is only of the vinyl itself, not the recording on it. I do think it is good to share things which are out of print, as long as no money changes hands. It's not strictly legal, and you can make no argument with a legal standing which says you have a right to do this, but I think it would be very difficult to be prosecuted if no money changes hands, and the material is not available anywhere. So, I'm not really arguing, and I do support the FTP site and everyone contributing, but I just want everyone to be careful that they do not believe you own the rights to create new copies of the music you buy. I know I'm fighting a losing battle. People who are excited about new music frequently offer to burn a CD for me after we've talk about music, but they usually look at me strange when I say that I will listen to it with them next time I visit, or I will buy it myself, but I refuse to take even a free copy of music that is still available. But I would not hesitate to make a temporary copy of something that is rare and out of print, especially if I might never find a used copy. Sorry for rehashing the same old topic, Brian
