Thanks for the input guys. Yes Brian it does sound like the reverse starts off before the normal sounds in the words. I have to try it sometime. It's such a great effect. I have never heard it before. Another great scene in a movie that was made to be played backwards. The movie Top Secret with Val Kelmar. There is a scene when they went to a book store. It's such a funny and brilliant scene! Jul On Dec 17, 2004, at 5:21 PM, Brian Willoughby wrote:

Julian,
You're probably right.
David Lynch has used this technique in his movies: have the actor practice speaking the syllables in reverse order, record that, then reverse the recording for spooky effect.
I've also had engineer/producers reverse tape on a reel-to-reel to record my guitar solo so that it would sound reversed when mixed in with the regular tracks (this was back before digital made it easier to reverse sections of a track without pulling tape reels off a deck).
Another technique is to record normal, forward sounds, reverse the recording just long enough to mix in reverb, and then reverse it again. This results in normal-sounding instruments or vocals, but the reverb fades in rather than fading out. Some reverb boxes have a similar effect, but they cannot make the reverb start before the sound starts. With offline recording, you can get all the audio recorded completely before adding reverb. The reason I mention this is that it sounds like Magnetic has a bit of this effect as well as reverse recording. I think that the effect is being varied each time, so that it doesn't sound the same every time.
Brian
