March 27, 2023 Dear Woodland Hills Residents, We are grateful for the additional moisture we have received this year. We are currently 193% of median snowpack with a couple of weeks left until median peak. In other words, we have a lot of snow and have the potential for more! With that said, there is considerable statewide atention on potential flooding. We are mindful of your concerns. We still have 1 - 2 more months until we reach high water stage. Any risks to Woodland Hills are dependent on future weather and timing. I have met regularly with county emergency management, county public works, and other specialists to gather information and make the necessary preparations. Last week, our public works director and I met with Glen Merrill, a senior hydrologist with the National Weather Service, to discuss our risks and possible additional preparations. I have ordered sandbags to use if necessary. We anticipate above-normal precipitation this week, with the possibility of 6 - 8 more storms before the end of April. Yes, more snow! The seasonal outlook for temperatures through June will be below normal. That is good news for us as it would allow for a slower snowmelt, meaning less chance for flooding. Historically, Woodland Hills has not had city-wide flooding. If flooding has occurred, it is usually localized or nuisance flooding - basements, window wells, or natural pools of water in low-lying areas of yards. We have not yet determined if we will be using sandbags in Woodland Hills. If your personal property is experiencing water flow, especially in your basement window wells, we encourage you to buy filled sandbags at a hardware store such as Tractor Supply, Cal Ranch, Lowes, or Home Depot and place them according to the information sheet we have atached. Please do not place sandbags on city property or on the city right-of-way along the streets. If sandbags are needed on city infrastructure, our public works department will place them. We will continue to keep a close eye on the current conditions, reassess our risks, and provide updates as needed. We love our beautiful city and will do all we can to keep it safe. Please let us know if you have any questions. Sincerely, Kari Malkovich City Council Emergency Manaer 801-822-9149
