Sorry if you've already received this; I never got confirmation that it made it to this list. Anyway, here's the request I received: ============================================ The Girl Scouts of Utah - Scenic View (Wasatch front) Service Unit is hosting a weekend at Trefoil Ranch Girl Scout Camp April 11 & 12. (Friday and Saturday). Our theme is science and technology hoping to broaden the girl's awareness of the subjects. We would greatly appreciate assistance a Friday night Star Party. The hope is a short lecture on solar systems, stars and planets, then we will split the girls into smaller group giving them an opportunity to gaze as constellations through the naked eye, view through a telescope and any other idea you may have. We anticipate about 200 girls that we will split them into groups small enough to rotate around possibly as many as 4 activities as not to overwhelmed any one activity. Can you help. I have to confess I know next to nothing about the subject although I think it is REALLY COOL!!!!! ==================================== The location is at Trefoil GS ranch, which is the very end of South Fork Canyon Road in Provo Canyon (the road that runs South from Vivian Park, before the turnoff to Sundance (if you are heading from Provo; if you are driving down the canyon from Heber, it will be a left turn after you pass the turnoff to Sundance). The sky is normally fairly dark there, though the horizons are pretty limited in the canyon, but we will also have a first quarter moon that night. With 200 scouts I'm going to need several volunteers to help. Please reply to the list and/or call me and let me know if you can help out Friday night, April 11, either with a telescope or with the lecture(s). Hi, I just spoke to you on the phone. How long will we be staying there? Do we have to be out by a certain time or will we be spending the night camped there? I can bring both of my scopes. the 8" and the newer 12". I am not sure about the transport trailer. It is an enclosed 5X10 with a drop down door and modified ramp. It is nicer to sleep in than a tent. I have a Honda Passport with 4 wheel drive. My phone number is 801 525-2938. Eugene, I'm thinking we will be there for just a couple of hours -- at some point the girls will have to go to bed. I don't believe they will let us camp there overnight, but I'll ask. More details to come... thanks for volunteering! /Rich --- EUGENE MARSHALL <emarshall1947@msn.com> wrote:

For those willing to help, they will be serving us dinner at 6. I know there is snow up there, how much I'm trying to find out as I write this. Worst case they can turn off the lights and we can set up in the parking lot, assuming the weather isn't a factor on Friday. Again, with 200 girl scouts, any volunteer help would be appreciated! But please RSVP so I can communicate it to those providing dinner. Call me if you have access to a digital projector that I can borrow for the lecture, or if you have any questions/concerns. 801~380~3331 (I live in Lindon) /Rich ____________________________________________________________________________________ You rock. Hi all, So far it looks like I'll have 4 helpers for tomorrow; anyone else that can/wants to come up should, with 200 girl scouts all the help the better. Directions to Trefoil ranch:
From the mouth of Provo Canyon (starting the odometer where 800 North in Orem Crosses over University Ave.) it's 5.8 miles to Vivian Park/South Fork, just right off the highway there. Drive South into South Fork Canyon (narrow, winding road that begins at Vivian Park) and follow the road until it dead-ends at the Girl Scout camp (can't remember how far, roughly 5 miles is a guess). I'm not sure about cell phone availability there, but you can try: 801~380~3331 if you have trouble finding it or have any questions. Horizons will be very limited, and with the snow up there we may just set up in the parking lot. I'm guessing it's going to be Saturn, the moon, and maybe a couple of brighter M-objects. I'll also probably do a little constellation talk (with the green laser) for those waiting for a peek through the scopes.
See you tomorrow! /Rich --- david kreis <davidkreis@sfcn.org> wrote:
