Transit of Venus -- I'll be setting up at the Novell campus in Provo
If any of you want to join me, I'll be setting up my 6" Newtonian, and my 15x70 binoculars (mounted), equipped with solar filters of course, for the Transit of Venus next Tuesday, June 5th in the afternoon. This is the last opportunity (weather permitting!) in our lifetimes to see this rare astronomical event -- it won't happen again for over a hundred years (2117). I'm planning on setting up on the N.E. side of the "great and spacious" Novell high-rise building in the East Bay campus in Provo. If my info is correct, the transit should begin about 4:09 p.m. and go until sunset. Otherwise, if you have solar gear, I recommend you plan some kind of public outreach in your own neighborhood... Clear skies! /R
Thank you for the invitation, but I will be setting up on my driveway in Lindon. I have a couple of youth groups coming over. I used solar projection for the eclipse and that worked well, so I will be doing that again, besides having another telescope with a solar filter for direct observing. David O. Hello, I set up my 4 1/2 reflector and projected it into the back of my Tahoe / station wagon. I made an aiming device with some wire around the front of scope. This has a 1 inch loop above scope. This sent a shadow to a card at the end. From there I used motions find to good image on my hand, Then projected that into car about 6 or 7 feet away. Used "wide angle" eye piece 25 MM, Had a 3 foot sun image. No filters All neighbors could see. I also put lots of tarps shades to make inside of car "room" dark. I had a 4 foot movie screen which I set up. White cardboard works too. Photos of screen are OK even tho cloudy. Anyone know why the image was in "Black and White" No colors like in Kit Peak images with yellow orange flames? Did see some nice sun spots. Good thing it was cloudy for the eclipse or hundreds of people would be semi blinded. My projector worked even thru the clouds. The wire loop alignment avoided any aiming risks. I too use projection for one of my scopes, and yes, more people can see it that way at the same time. The image is white because that is the natural color we get. Those orange color images are crated by the filters used. I have a small filter that provides the orange color you mention. David O. Take the University Ave. Exit off I15 -- then proceed straight through the light (turning left takes you toward the Provo Mall, Sams club, Ruby River steak house, etc., but you want to go straight instead, heading East) -- the multi-story Novell building will be on your left. Turn left into the Novell parking lot at the next light and proceed around the building to the right. I'll be set up someplace on the grass to the NE of that large building betwee 4 and 6 p.m. --- On Mon, 6/4/12, Randall McNair <citrusavenger@gmail.com> wrote:

DOH! These directions ASSume that you've taken the University Ave. Exit after heading Southbound on I15 from North of Provo. If coming from the south end of the valley, you'll be turning Right (East) at the first light you encounter after leaving the freeway, then immediately left into the Novell Campus. Sorry for the confusion -- I also ASSumed that everyone knew where Novell was! :P --- On Mon, 6/4/12, Richard Tenney <retenney@yahoo.com> wrote:

Turn left into the Novell parking lot at the next light and proceed around the building to the right. I'll be set up someplace on the grass to the NE of that large building betwee 4 and 6 p.m.

Are you talking south Provo by their big building there?

If I see no interest on the transit from my neighbors, I might join you, I live in provo a block away from the mall, im gonna be using a 6" reflector with a 80mm piggybacked on it, both have solar filters, and the 6" has a camera with a CaK line filter on it

I worked at the "H" building for about a year,... about 5 years ago so im still not sure about the parking lot spot you are talking about, but have a decent memory of the place, so I think I will find my way through, also, I might take my 10" for observing and my 6" for imaging, still havent asked around the neighbors if they wanna look at the transit, but who knows, are you actually having a crowd there, or just gonna see if people get interested? -----Original Message----- From: Richard Tenney Sent: Monday, June 04, 2012 3:45 PM To: Utah Valley Astronomy Association Subject: Re: [UVAA] Transit of Venus -- I'll be setting up at the Novellcampusin Provo DOH! I don't know about a crowd, but there may be plenty enough folks passing by that will want a peek, not to mention the folks I work with in building E. The more we set up, the bigger the crowd, I suspect. There's a large grass area on the NE side of the high-rise building that I'll be setting up on -- look for me there around 4. Thanks for coming! /R --- On Mon, 6/4/12, Jorge Gutierrez <gotfoxx@hotmail.com> wrote:
