We are again hosting a star party for Timpview H.S. astronomy students (and others who are interested) in South Fork Canyon Friday, 8 October, 2010, starting at dusk (sun sets about 7:00 p.m.). Help is needed as we are expecting as many as 200 folks! If you have a scope, or are interested in informing attendees about the night sky, please come! I'll be bringing my 16" dob, and will probably start setting up around 6:30 pm or so. Directions: From the mouth of Provo Canyon (starting the odometer where 800 North in Orem Crosses over University Ave.) it's 5.8 miles to Vivian Park/South Fork, just right off the highway there. Drive South into South Fork Canyon (narrow, winding road that begins at Vivian Park) 3.25 miles (you'll drive past another nice park on the way) to where you see a brown "National Forest Access" sign -- turn (right) in here. This is a newer park -- "Big Springs" -- drive up another quarter mile and the road ends in a nice big flat parking lot. The sky is fairly dark here despite a somewhat limited horizon. Richard, I'd enjoy attending the annual party as well as meeting fellow star gazers and bringing my 11" cassegrain along with a number of eyepieces. If there is no objection to me bringing my family, I'll be there. Thanks. So does that day still work for both of you, assuming we get decent weather? We could push it to the next Friday in November with a new moon, but it's going to be cold! Also, I'm working on contacting some others with telescopes that may be willing to come up but my resources are limited. So if either of you know anyone, especially you Richard T. with the UVAA, that would come up with their telescope, the more the better! I'm getting excited, and so are the students! The annual Timpview High astronomy student star party is coming up in a couple of weeks, and if past events are any indicator, I'm going to need help with extra telescopes! This is a very enthusiastic and fun crowd, with plenty of interest. In the past, the students have been just delightful -- curious, respectful, and eager to learn more. Please make plans to join me. I realize this is close to Halloween (which is the following Monday), but I promise it will be worth your time to come up and join us.
