While not an "official" UVAA star party, I will be joining a few members of SLAS, UVAA and OAS at Wolf Creek Summit (East of Park City at about 9,000 feet) on Saturday night for those serious about deep sky observing in very dark skies; any of you are welcome to join us, though be aware that this is a 90 minute drive from Utah County, is primitive (no bathrooms up there), and quite cold at night. Missing news?

Hi all, and welcome to you new members. If any of you haven't been paying attention, and have been missing the astro news from Patrick Wiggins, Utah's NASA Solar System Ambassador, former (retired) long-time Hansen Planetarium employee, etc. who lives in Tooele and helps to operate the Stansbury Park Observatory Complex (SPOC) there, I've attached the latest from him with a notice/reminder. Since Patrick does not want to send his news to this list (I'm still not clear on his reasons), and since I don't want to have to remain in the business of forwarding it each time, each of you individually have to request news from him if you want to recieve it. Mars watch in Lindon Wednesday

For anyone in Utah County that doesn't have a telescope and wants to see Mars I will have the 16-inch set up in my back yard Wednesday night and will welcome anyone that wants to come have a peek, starting at 11 pm. I live right next door to a church, so there's plenty of parking. I'm willing to keep it set up until 2 a.m. at the latest, unless interest dies down before then on a work/school night. I live at 54 N. Canal Drive in Lindon. Take Lindon Center street East of State Street (there's a Walkers Gas/Taco Bell and a car dealer on the corner where you turn) approx. 1 mile to Canal Drive (about 700 E.); turn left at the corner where the LDS church sits (Canal Drive). I'm the first house on the right (I share the fence with the church), gravel driveway, horses out back, etc.; Please park at the church. 801-785-4403. Anyone else that wants to bring a telescope is welcome. I'm going to try and mitigate the lighting at the church with aluminum foil, assuming my extension ladder is tall enough to reach... ;-) This is not an "official" UVAA party; if anyone else wants to do a public mars watch, feel free. More than you need to know

Ok, looking at the JPL site I mentioned in my last message it looks like closest approach for SPOC will occur at 0800 UT (0200 MDT) on the 27th when an observer will be 55,754,437.643 km away from Mars. Of course it that observer stands up on the roof of SPOC that will decrease to 55,754,437.640 km :-) I'm not sure if that is from the observer to the surface of Mars or to its center. And I'm still not sure about the light travel thing. That is are we closest at 0200 or is that when the light arrives from when we were closest, or do we have to wait until the light gets here. So, depending on interpretation and with one way light time being 3.099613 minutes, that time could be 0200 plus or minus 3 minutes and 5.97678 seconds. Ok, is everyone as confused as I am? :-) Hope to see y'all at SPOC tonight! Persieds?

Just spent 30 minutes laying on my roof looking for Perseids (0152 to 0222 MDT). While it is pretty cloudy there are lots of big holes and much of the cloud cover is thin enough to see stars through it. However, during my 30 minutes I only saw 1 very bright Perseid that left a train about 15 degrees long, 1 sporadic that actually flew into Perseus and one airplane. Anyone have any better luck? Patrick :-) BTW, Mars next to the Moon looked very nice.
