I'd heard about this a while ago, but at San Diego Comic Con a teaser trailer was released for the new version of Carl Sagan's Cosmos. It was great to see the 'Spaceship of the Imagination' again. http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/07/23/cosmos_a_space_time_odys... If there's one person who could do it justice, it's Neil DeGrasse Tyson. But since it's on Fox, I hope it doesn't get canceled after 5 episodes...grumbleFireflygrumble. Thanks for that link, Dan. There's a debate on CN about it. Seems people are already either for it or against it. Very few seem willing to watch it first, then make up their minds afterwards. And it usually boils down to people either liking or hating NDGT or Seth McFarlane, or even Carl Sagan. BTW, some of us old-timers met Sagan when he gave a talk at Westminster in, what was it, '75 or so? He was a perfect gentleman, very affable, even to this then-teenager with maybe 1% of his I.Q. I have the original on factory VHS. I wonder if it's available on DVD or download? Also still have my original vinyl LP of the "Music of Cosmos" soundtrack. It still holds it's own very well. Some of the best parts of the show had nothing to do with special effects. On Tue, Jul 23, 2013 at 10:22 AM, Daniel Holmes <danielh@holmesonics.com>wrote:

There's plenty of people who are scared of change or anything new. Let them sit around the dying campfire, huddling for warmth rather than putting more wood on it. Me? I'm looking forward to it. I loved the original, but it does need some updating. What was that again? "Come come, Mr. Scott. Young minds, fresh ideas. Be tolerant." Besides, nobody has ever forced me to watch a TV show since I was 8 years old. Dan On Jul 23, 2013, at 10:54 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

I didn't see his television show. It happened during one the decades where I chose not to own a TV. But I did read some of his books. I happen to now be reading "A Demon-Haunted World, Science as a Candle in the Dark". It's 20 years old but the battle against ignorance and quackery is still very much alive today. He takes no prisoners and lets me know that my own views are not the least bit extreme. He directly addresses UFO's, anti-science, the commercial self interests that today are characterized as flat-earth, and religious bigotry that oppresses the rights of women. It's a must read or reread in the climate of today's discussions. Critical thinking at it's best. DT
If I can dig my VHS set out of storage, and you have a VCR, I'll gladly loan it to you. It's 13 one-hour episodes, if I recall correctly. Originally broadcast on PBS. If I spring for the DVDs, I'd be willing to loan those to you, as well. You won't be disappointed. On Tue, Jul 23, 2013 at 12:29 PM, daniel turner <outwest112@yahoo.com>wrote:

Early Digistar had a part in that, but only a minor part. But he still got the rotation around the Big Dipper wrong. It was a good series, but I would rather watch NDGT or one of the more modern "sort of" equivalents.. I watched the whole series on Netflix a couple of months ago. I haven't looked to see if it is still there. I hadn't seen it when I was younger and I really enjoyed watching. I look forward to seeing the updated one. I noticed in the release that it said Fox and Natgeo. Maybe they will run it on Natgeo even if they kill it on Fox. I just bit the bullet and ordered the DVD set from Amazon. $63.20 plus shipping (rate depends on shipping method selected), so that's about five bucks per episode, not bad. They have 6 copies left in stock at Amazon. More buying options from Amazon sellers. I didn't want to dig out the old VCR and hook it up. It's been in a box in the basement for about ten or twelve years. And THEN I'd have to locate the VHS tapes. Probably all that stuff is down there next to my Victrola and 8mm movie camera & projector. The Hards wing of the Obsolete Technology museum. The DVDs aren't far behind in joining them. You should see the obsolete technology we have! In addition to a TV with no converter (we don't have cable), we have VHS recorders (one that Cory uses every day for her soap), bags full of stuff like dial-up modems and beam splitters, my first IBM computer with two floppy drives, bags of disks of 5 1/4 and 3" (?) size, a movie camera that uses tape, several film cameras including my dear old Hasselblad, a large boom box that runs on batteries, a smaller black and white TV that runs on batteries (we were given it in exchange for listening to a presentation at a crematorium) which also has no converter, a movie projector, a stereo slide viewer, etc. etc. It's pretty silly. -- Joe ________________________________ From: Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, July 26, 2013 7:29 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Cosmos re-booted. I managed to sell my 37" CRT TV to a guy here at work, for a hundred bucks several years ago. He stuck it in his basement and connected a VCR so his grandkids can watch taped cartoons that they've had for decades, since his kids were little. We don't have cable or any other subscription TV, either. I put a directional UHF antenna in the garage rafters and aimed it at the Oquirrhs. Pulls in all the local digital broadcasts, FREE. Ran a cable to about 5 rooms in the house. Had to use 2 signal amplifiers and several splitters, but it works well. On Fri, Jul 26, 2013 at 9:56 AM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

I saw a Funny Home Videos episode where a parent was showing numbered flash cards to their young daughter and she was saying the number. They came to 11, and the kid said, completely serious, "PAUSE". I had to explain it to my wife. You can buy a decent turntable (with a USB cable even!) nowadays for under $100. Vinyl has made somewhat of a comeback for audiophiles -- don't abandon those LP's yet! There's a fair market for some of them. My youngest has a turntable and several (new) albums on vinyl actually. ________________________________ From: Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, July 26, 2013 12:37 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Cosmos re-booted. Funny you should mention vinyl. A few months ago I heard from a record company in the UK asking to use one of my eclipse shots on the cover of an LP they were producing. I thought it was a joke especially when they started talking some pretty serious coin. So I checked out the company and found it's for real and gave them the ok to use the picture. Next thing I know the check cleared the bank (actually I donated it to one of the animal welfare groups I support) and a package from the UK showed up containing several copies of the LP. Alas, though the eclipse picture looks great I've no turntable to play the records on. Cheers, patrick On 26 Jul 2013, at 15:32, Richard Tenney wrote:

My dad actually brought home The Crazy World of Arthur Brown on 8-track, and George Carlin's "Class Clown" album (with the 7 words you can't say on TV). Also the 5th Dimension. On the down side, there were all those Boots Randolph albums. Cool now, not then. I feel for you, man... Although I did have to drive my mom's Vista Cruiser. Ever watch That 70's Show? That show hit the nail on the head. On Fri, Jul 26, 2013 at 1:01 PM, Daniel Holmes <danielh@holmesonics.com>wrote:

Not much about astronomy, except I considered Boots a "star". He brought quite a bit of family to ski also. Carol & I saw his last show at the Rose Wagner, before he passed. "Yakkity Sax" lives on. On another note, we saw Bob Hope's last visit here. The lights dimmed and this deep, booming voice said, "Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Edwin R Murrow." He came in from a day of skiing at Alta, where he had visited yearly, except for the WWII years, since 1936! I think he was maybe 90+ at the time. He proceeded to discuss Hope's various trips entertaining the troops. Very interesting event. A very good read is the book Berlin Diary, by then CBS correspondent, William L Shirer (the rise & fall, etc), who was in Germany while Murrow was broadcasting from London during the blitz. He was on the last Clipper to leave Spain. As I said, a very good read. Speaking of Clippers, Brent & Patrick & you other pilots, I remember watching the PanAM China Clippers leave their birth at what became Treasure Island, and take off westbound for the Orient, but flying _under_ the Golden Gate Bridge as they could not gain sufficient elevation to pass above. Seemed like a long run before they were free of the water. I was probably 5 or so at the time. 73
