Another reporter was already planning on doing an article about the eclipse for the Daily Herald so my wife forwarded the information to him, hopefully she got him the info soon enough. I plan to be there also with my ETX & solar filter, I have a pair of eclipse glasses I'll bring also. --Paul David Moulton wrote:

I will be able to attend with my scope & solar filter. It would be nice to have others with filters and maybe some of the welding glass that has been talked about here recently.

To all on this list who are planning to attend or sponsor an eclipse-viewing party: Please send me details about when and where so I can put it in a Deseret News story. I know when the eclipse happens, but some parties might start earlier, some later. Thanks very much, Joe Bauman
Joe et al- I'll be up at Churchill Jr High, on Wasatch Blvd between 3900 South and 4500 South, setting up at 6:00 pm or so. I'll have my telescope and filter along with some #14 Welders Glass lenses. I'll have cardboard and paper so people can build their own pin-hole viewers/projectors as well. I just bought some Baader film,(Thanks again Dave Dunn) so if I have the chance between now and Monday, I'll put together a set of filters for my 70mm binoculars. Anyone and everyone is welcome. Joe, where did you get the Baader film??? Locally? Price? Thank you VERY much. Is this comparable to mylar like Tuthill sells? Jim Stitley --- Joe Borgione <jborgion@xmission.com> wrote:

I was able to purchase a couple of pieces from Dave Dunn, who also subscribes to this list. He'll probably respond before long, as he responded to my query about it last week or so here; I don't know how much material he has stockpiled, but he was selling a 4.5 inch square for $4.00. As far as I know, the Baader film is top of the line, and preferred by many. I'm not sure what Tuthill sells or how it compares, although, I'll lay odds somebody on this list can fill us in. Knowing Tuthills reputation, his material his excellant as well. Joe Borgione -------------------

S&T reviewed several solar-filter mylars years ago, Tuthill's was one of them. They reviewed Baader material afterwards, it wasn't sold at the time of the mass-review, but essentially it blows them all away. I have used TO, Tuthills (Solar-Skreen), and a generic brand, there is no comparison. I even prefer it to my TO glass filter. Chuck --- Jim Stitley <sitf2000@yahoo.com> wrote:

I have been camping for several days, so I'm just catching up. Several of my neighbors mentioned to me today that Harmon's here in Orem has banners and flyers up for the party, so I guess we better show up ;) . I would appreciate hearing of anyone else who is planning on attending the Utah County party. Rich, I am assuming you are coming (perhaps late), but let me know one way or another. dave On Wednesday 05 June 2002 09:09 pm, you wrote:

After all the conversation about safe filters, I ran across the following article on the Sky and Telescope web site. It states that welders glass from shade 12 to 14 is safe to view eclipses. Please read this article: http://skyandtelescope.com/observing/objects/sun/article_94_1.asp The author tests things like floppy disks, CDs and Pop Tart wrappers. Interesting article. Thanks for that, Brent. It confirmed my memory of a #13 as recommended. It also made me wonder who on earth would actually smoke a piece of glass, in the 21st century? Rich Tenney showed me a neat little arraingement today. We looked at the sun through a welder's glass held in front of his mini-binoculars (were they 8x25's, Rich?) for a neat view, tinted dark green. I finished the solar filters for my 70mm binos, so we had a look at the sun with them. Rich commented that 15x is just about right for an eclipse, and I tend to agree; I think 20x would be really good too. The face shield would be a welcome option for bino-viewing, that was obvious. My wife and I plan to watch the opening stages of the eclipse from our front yard, while our daughter attends the birthday-party of a friend. When she returns, we just might make a dash to Stansbury for the middle and ending phases. Chuck --- Brent Watson <brentjwatson@yahoo.com> wrote:

Dave, I'll be there, but I don't have a solar scope. I do have a #14 welder's glass and a small set of binoculars that you can hold up to it. I also have a pair of mylar "glasses" (the cardboard kind) that I will bring. I should be there between 6 and 6:30. Rich --- David Moulton <dmoulton@myrealbox.com> wrote:

Just wondering: Is the wilder's glass OK with binocs, or only safe for viewing the sun when not using binocs? I don't know anything about the subject. Joe
The welder's glass is safe with binos and telescopes ONLY if placed in front of the OBJECTIVES, not after the eyepieces. The sun must be filtered BEFORE the optical system. Chuck --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:
