One of the companies looking to put the public into space is called Canadian Arrow. Looking at their web site I was surprised when I saw a picture of the rocket they plan on using. Does it look as familiar to any of you as it does to me? http://www.planetspace.org/lo I wonder if Dr. Von Braun ever imagined his design would be used some 70 years later to put people instead of amatol into space. BTW, on a somewhat related subject, Chuck was right. I went with a group to see Astronaut Farmer yesterday and came away disappointed. If other want to see it I'd suggest waiting until it shows up on late night tv. pw

I know you're both being tongue-in-cheek, but let's examine it anyway. The buzz-bomb wasn't designed for hyper-velocities (straight wings, no leading-edge sweepback). Not enough room for fuel and oxidizer (it was an air-breather). Thrust aside, for a rocket to fly, the center of gravity must be ahead of the center of pressure. This is the reason for fins (or fletching on an arrow or dart). Without fins, one must spin-stabilize, like a rifle bullet, in order to avoid tumbling. Spin-stabilizing a manned rocket makes for a nauseated crew. The V-2 was and is a very streamlined rocket- there just isn't a lot of room for aerodynamic improvement, other than minor tweaks. --- Michael Carnes <MichaelCarnes@earthlink.net> wrote:

Hi all, just wanted to say hi from Sarajevo. I've been here for a while working on the Talovic story and other articles. Thought you might want to hear from the eastern-most member of SLAS. I subscribed to the list under a different email server, because I can't access my desnews account from here and it helps me beat loneliness to hear what Utah Astronomy folks are talking about. Take care, Joe Bauman --------------------------------- TV dinner still cooling? Check out "Tonight's Picks" on Yahoo! TV.
Kako ste', Joe! Looks like you're not just the science guy anymore, eh? If you get over to Croatia, I could hook you up with some of my relatives. Remember, over there you're CANADIAN, if anybody asks... ;o) --- Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

Well, I do what I can for the paper -- this is actually my second trip to Bosnia. The first was in '98, only three years after the fighting stopped, and things were pretty grim. It's much improved. Bosnians I talked to speaking fondly of going to the Croatian cost for vacation. Best wishes, Joe Chuck Hards <chuckhards@yahoo.com> wrote: Kako ste', Joe!
