Getting Started with my new telescope
Hello everyone, I am new to groups like SLAS and owning a telescope. My 4 year old has been pestering my wife for about 9 months for a telescope, and I've been wanting to get one for the family over the years. Finally, this year, my wife got me one. Anyway, even though I know about telescopes, I am a little lost in how to set this up correctly. I know that I can just blindly try and find what I'm looking at, sweeping back and forth, and hoping for the best, but this is a pretty good 'scope, a Celestron AstroMaster 114EQ, and I know it has the capability to track stars and locate items based on their coordinates in the sky. I'm just wondering if there are any small groups that get together semi-regularly and would be willing to help a newbie get started with his new equipment. My kids would much appreciate me being able to use this when I set it up, rather than saying 'Just a minute, I've almost got it.' over and over all night. I would also be cool to be able to participate in some of the star parties with my 'scope. Thanks, Mike Wells
