Hi all. I made the trip to Wolf Creek on Friday night. The conditions were not that great, but I managed to get one decent image before the clouds took over. The highlight of the evening was getting a peek through Steve Dodds 33-inch Dob. Wow, what a scope!! Late in the evening I performed a belly flop on the back of my chair (don't ask) and really did a number on my ribs! I don't think I broke anything, but that won't stop me from whimpering every time I breath, cough, laugh, etc. Ouch! I imaged M16, the Eagle Nebula. Here is a link to the thumbnail version: http://www.utahastronomy.com/album16/Utah_Astronomy_M16_Eagle Click the thumbnail for the full version. I am pretty happy with the image, but it's not my best work. Cheers, Tyler
Lovely image Tyler! I had some last minute stuff come up and wasn't able to make it, but I must confess when I heard the rain pattering on the roof just after midnight I didn't feel so bad about not driving up there. I did want a peek thru Steve's scope however; I hope he brings it up there another time. I feel bad for the rest of you dealing with so many clouds... -Rich --- Tyler Allred <tylerallred@earthlink.net> wrote:

The trip up wasn't that great either. The jack knifed truck at the summit of Parleys brought the traffic to a halt, as did the home town parade in Francis. I thought Miss Francis looked pretty cool leading the parade with all four hooves painted up...

Wow indeed! I felt bad for those 2 guy's from Vernal who came all the way to Wolf Creek for a star party and so they could get some kinda idea of what kind of scope they should purchase. You never want to start at the top. You want to work your way up to it, in increments. As I was leaving, one of them was still trying to calculate whether he could would be able to swing purchasing such a scope AND child support... ;)

Excellent picture Tyler. What is it? It don't look like no M16 I ever knew. I uploaded a different view of M16 from my personal greeting card collection. But frankly, I don't see any similarities... ;) <http://www.utahastronomy.com/diveboss>

And here's one taken up at Little Mountain some time ago with M-16 and M-1 in the same field of view: http://www.trilobyte.net/paw/slas/patrickw/PATRICKW563.JPG Patrick

Forgot to mention the higher resolution image: http://www.trilobyte.net/paw/slas/patrickw/PATRICKW563F.JPG And speaking of high res, have a look at these ISS and Mars images I found on the web: https://webspace.utexas.edu/gentryml/www/astro.html And taken with a webcam, no less... Patrick
That M1 looks a more like an AK-47 to me. Norm Patrick Wiggins wrote:

Guy is the authority but I'm pretty sure that's not an AK.
Guy, what say ye?
I don't know about being much of an authority, because I usually had my head down when these thing were firing at me, BUT, from what I can see in the photo, I'll go out on a limb and say that this is a garden variety SKS Carbine in Caliber 7.62X39 (NGC 7.62X39). Same round as the AK-47 and similar in appearance, especially when exposed to it's muzzle flash. The giveaway though is the folding bayonet and distance between the upper hand guard and the front sight. But I could be wrong... ;) How to tie this into the topic of Astronomy... hmmmm. Ah yes, I have seen some of these through a "scope". ;)

Nice photo Patrick. Although a somewhat under exposed view of M16 and dim companion star ;) the other object appears more sinister, having what looks to be a suspicious "gas" object on the top and a cheap looking "shiny" object at midpoint. I would have to be down range listening for it's tell tale sound to be sure, but by the way that the hair is standing on the back of my neck, and my upper lip is beginning to curl and snarl, I suspect this object to be none other than NGC 7.62X39, Hmmm???
