Re: [Utah-astronomy] Telescope dealers
The "Telescopes and Rockets" is a guy selling out of his home; I bought some Celestron colored filters from him a couple of years ago (he's legit). Sorry I don't remember his name. I doubt if he has much in stock, but it doesn't hurt to ask. /R --- On Wed, 7/15/09, Craig Smith <hemismith@sbcglobal.net> wrote:

Thanks. Hi Jay,
Are there any major telescope dealers in SLC? I've been to the Clark Planetarium and Inkley's, but their selections are somewhat limited. I'm looking for a small refractor; Inkley's had a nice Televue 76 but out of my budget!
Celestron had something in Highland called "Telescopes and Rockets" listed; ever been there?
Thanks,

It's not in SLC but have you tried AstroMart ( http://www.astromart.com/classifieds/ )??? I have had great success buying and selling astro items at reasonable prices just check the 'Refractor' section of the classifieds Aloha Rob
Actually I have sold some stuff on Astromart in the past, and there are often good things there. I know this hobby works better via mail order due to the limited number of customers. Right now I'm trying to get something for a trip next week; it's probably too late without paying exhorbitant shipping charges. I had the benefit (or curse) of previously living just minutes from two of the largest stores. I'm not sure if I'll get a real refractor or something cheap like the ST80. I want something lightweight, and most of the good ones are pretty hefty (for a lightweight tripod). I was surprised Clark didn't have any ST80s; lots of dobs though. ________________________________ From: Rob Ratkowski Photography <ratkwski@hawaii.rr.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 15, 2009 3:27:02 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Telescope dealers It's not in SLC but have you tried AstroMart ( http://www.astromart.com/classifieds/ )??? I know you said that you tried Inkley's on State Street, but did you speak directly with Bill Cowles? Bill is a SLAS member, runs the astronomy department, and can probably give you as good a price as you're likely to get anywhere but ebay or astromart. Bill had surgery recently and may not be in until next week, but give them a try anyway. Kim

Great to know, thanks! No, the person I spoke with didn't know much about telescopes. I think he said that was the only Inkley's that had telescopes on display, so that makes sense. I'll stop by again or call. I think the nearest full dealer is Teton Telescopes. They're right on my way to Yellowstone next week. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Kim Sent: Wednesday, July 15, 2009 9:10 PM To: 'Utah Astronomy' Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Telescope dealers I know you said that you tried Inkley's on State Street, but did you speak directly with Bill Cowles? Thanks; that makes sense as when I looked at the address I didn't think there were any stores in that area. ________________________________ From: Richard Tenney <retenney@yahoo.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 15, 2009 3:22:56 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Telescope dealers The "Telescopes and Rockets" is a guy selling out of his home; I bought some Celestron colored filters from him a couple of years ago (he's legit).
