Re: [Utah-astronomy] Government funded observing platforms
Patrick, There is an aviation arrow for the SLC to San Francisco route on top of the hill just north of exit 62 on I-80. This is the same spot I mentioned some time back as a good place to get an unobstructed view of the western horizon. Ed
Hi Ed, Thanks for the tip. I looked on Google Earth at that area but could not find it. Here's a screen shot of where I was looking: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/exit62.jpg Is that the right area? If it is can you see the arrow and help me narrow the search? Thanks, patrick On 26 Aug 2013, at 07:23, Ed wrote:

Great little platforms for setting up in a dark sky area! Do you think we could get the government to install electrical outlets and bathrooms for us? -A On Mon, Aug 26, 2013 at 3:28 PM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>wrote:

Ha! Actually they did originally have power so maybe the wiring is still there so you'd just need to bring your own generator. patrick :) p.s. Next time we get some nice weather I think I'll hike up to the arrows above Lakepoint. On 26 Aug 2013, at 15:49, Ann House wrote:

Hello Ed, I've added letters and numbers to the image to help you and others describe the location of the arrow. http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/exit62.jpg So for example the westbound exit from the freeway is located across from the letter I and up from the number 10. patrick On 26 Aug 2013, at 15:28, Patrick Wiggins wrote:

Patrick, It would be good to post the lat/lon of the arrows you find. I have known about the ones by St. George for several years. Coincidentally I was talking to my brother about this same topic. Funny how the same things travel the net at the same time. A couple of locations I am interested in are the beacon on the mountain to the north of Immigration Canyon, and the beacon northwest of the Spiral Jetty. I have flown over them both many times, and even hiked to the one north of Immigration canyon. I do not recall seeing any arrows at either location. The beacon northwest of the jetty is in much better shape. The beacon housing minus the lenses is still there, and the remains of the generator shack are still there as well. BTW, did you know that Montana State still maintains the beacon system through the western mountains of Montana? They are charted and maintained operational. Some day I'd like to fly that system at night just to see what the old navigation was like. ________________________________ From: Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Monday, August 26, 2013 6:11 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Government funded observing platforms Hello Ed, I've added letters and numbers to the image to help you and others describe the location of the arrow. http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/exit62.jpg So for example the westbound exit from the freeway is located across from the letter I and up from the number 10. patrick On 26 Aug 2013, at 15:28, Patrick Wiggins wrote:

That's my plan. But first I need to find them. :) I did post that for the arrow above Lakepoint: 40° 42′ 16.11″ N 112° 15′ 12.50″ W

This old aviation chart shows the one at Lakepoint as well as several others including one by Stockton: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwYwM1kmongFc3duTzlBbHdUa0E/edit?pli=1

Here's another oldie but goodie you can fly today: The Four Course Radio Range http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-VqtNY8vpw patrick
I just got this from my brother: https://sites.google.com/site/gisarrowproject/interactive-map It is an interactive map of the arrows around the west. There is one in Woods Cross! I need to go visit that one. Way to go Brent, taking all the fun out of finding them. But seriously, that's a great map. Looks like several are an easy drive for my place. I may just head out this afternoon and see how many I can find. Thanks for posting, patrick On 26 Aug 2013, at 21:45, Brent Watson wrote:

I'll rent you a Stearman and give you a leather bag full of airmail so the experience can be complete. ;-) On Mon, Aug 26, 2013 at 6:23 PM, Brent Watson <brentjwatson@yahoo.com>wrote: Some day I'd like to fly that system at night just to see what the old navigation was like.
I have some of the old franked envelopes. As well as a couple of penny postcards. I don't recall if anything is airmail, but I would donate something to the bag. 73 Sent from my iPad On Aug 26, 2013, at 8:53 PM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:
