Hi, I am getting a new Ipad for my school and I would like your opinion on what is the best astronomy apps. for the apple Ipad. Any suggestions. Mark, I use SkySafari Pro. They have 3 versions, of which 2 are free, but the Pro version (+/_ $50--you might get a discount for a school. I do not know that, but it never hurts to ask) Anyway, I bought the 3d version (think Seth J has it also) as it may be used to control your telescope wirelessly, provided you have the bluetooth gizmo at your scope. Believe Seth had an earlier post describing his. I use the Orion doohickey. Did you get your Elk? Moose? Shriner? 73 On 10/30/2012 1:45 PM, Mark Shelton wrote:

Larry, is that the app you demonstrated at the last L&O meeting? I was impressed, pretty spiffy. On Oct 30, 2012 1:57 PM, "Larry Holmes" <larry@kijoda.com> wrote:

No Elk, Moose or Shriner? Just a wife with a broken arm and lots of mud/rain/snow. But we had a great time anyway. Skies were dark and beautiful. Hands down, Sky Safari Pro. Not cheap as far as apps go, but very comprehensive. I also like 'Exoplanet', 'Messenger', and 'Spacecraft 3D' are interesting. Dan On Oct 30, 2012, at 1:45 PM, Mark Shelton <astroshelton@yahoo.com> wrote:

Mark, SkySafari Pro is very nice. Good telescope interface via wifi if you have wifi to your scope. MoonMapPro is an informative program. StarMapPro is good, but the telescope control is limited. It’s not, truly, goto in capability. Get SkyWeek Plus and NASA, both free. Star Walk will show you what’s up when you hold it up to the section of the sky you’re looking at and Observer Pro will tell you what’s up to observe with magnitudes, etc. Sky Map and StarMap 3D+ are much like Star Walk. Mars Atlas is nice, as is MESSENGER and Exoplanet. Spacecraft 3D is fun, but you need to print off the terrains for it to work. Planisphere, flyby and MessierList along with pUniverse, Planets, Moon Globe, Gas Giants and Transients round out the list. WolframAlpha is nice for those questions like: “How far is Neptune from Pluto at this moment? What is the mass of Uranus?”, etc. What do I use the most? SkySafari Pro and WolframAlpha. MoonMapPro, occasionally. Have fun, Dave On Oct 30, 2012, at 1:45 PM, Mark Shelton <astroshelton@yahoo.com> wrote:

BTW--You know that Siri is a frontend to Wolfram Alpha, right? Most calculations can be done verbally... Although when I just tried "How far away is Neptune from Uranus at this moment?", she replied "Sorry, I can't search near businesses. Sorry about that!" Makes me wonder if Jobs put a data center out a little further than North Carolina... Dan On Oct 30, 2012, at 2:18 PM, Dave Gary <davegary@me.com> wrote:

Best Astro-App for an iPad? No contest. SkySafari. BUT... I see lots of people here talking about SkySafari Pro. I use SkySafari Plus v3.6. Yes, the "Pro" version is the baddest of the bad boys in this field, but the lowly "Plus" version costs a _lot_ less, controls my C11 and C6 via WiFi just fine, and has _never_ failed me when I ask it for information about an object of interest during a star party. Sure, the "Pro" version has 740k deep sky objects, but... really? You _really_ need that? My "Plus" version has "only" 31k deep sky objects (of which maybe 300 are of interest) and "only" 2.5M stars down to magnitude 12. So here's my question to you SF Pro users - when have you ever needed your app to do things that _only_ the Pro version can do? Other must-have astronomy apps for iPad: Luan - best lunar calendar Daylight - hours of daylight/twilight/night display Sunlight - where is the Sun shining right now? Exoplanet - you _have_ to get this app. Kepler - variation on Exoplanet, but focused on Kepler Moon Globe & Mars Globe - self-explanatory Seth -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Dave Gary Sent: Tuesday, October 30, 2012 2:19 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] best ipad app. Mark, SkySafari Pro is very nice. I got the pro because it gave me 50% off the Mac version at the time. And it was 40% off as well. There also wasn't any question as to what it could do, whether it was capable or not. Aloha from Maui Hi Mark, IMHO SkySafari is the best app there is. Someone for SLAS recommended it a couple years back and from then I have not used my charts or portable clock, planisphere and sometimes not even my log book. I would also recommend MoonMap Pro, AsroCalc and VelaClock Good luck and have fun, I know I am Aloha Rob
Thank you for all the responses, there is no budget from the school for software........... so any software i want for my Ipod will be at my expense. So thank you for all the advice. I will be looking into a few games my son wants to pay over the internet from his house with me. That should be a new and fun experience, and astro apps. This should be exciting to get a new electronic Ipad. Now I have to wait for apple to ship it out and then everyone will want one. LOL Thanks again Mark Shelton Indian Hills Middle School CTE Tech Ed. When I'm planning a night of observing I like to have data about the times of dusk and info on the phase and placement of the Moon. I get that and lots more from a very handy app called "LunaSolCal". https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/lunasolcal/id390175338?mt=8 For just plain eye candy appeal I like showing folks one called "Emerald Observatory for iPad". https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/emerald-observatory-for-ipad/id364904759?mt=... Since I usually run the refactor at SPOC (where we spend a lot of time looking at Jupiter and Saturn) the one I use there far more than other app is Gas Giants. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gas-giants/id397831483?mt=8 patrick
