A reminder that there's a special on KUED (channel 7) right now about Mars exploration. NASA TV ran an ad earlier today saying they'd have coverage tonight at 8, 9 and 10 pm MST. NASA TV's web site says nothing about those times and mentions coverage only at 8:30 and midnight. Patrick
Patrick Thanks for the heads up. I just got home and missed just the first few minutes of it. I thought it was cool that they launched without a good set of software to guide the rover exploration and they had time to fine tune it and replace it before it was needed. The whole preparation, launch, landing, exploration endeavor is so large when compared with everyday human experience that no matter how many times you whiteness it, it is really exciting. I love NOVA! What an amazing program. I was very impressed with the graphics, and coverage of the developmental problems that they encountered, especially the parachute since I'm also an avid amateur model rocketeer and have had some first hand experiences with parachutes "shredding" with fast deployments. It was fun to see them use 'simple' fixes to the problem that I've had to use myself on occasions. Although I've found it much easier to use a sliding ring over the shroud lines to slow the chutes opening to be more effective than reinforcing the material,or altering the shape of the chute, of course size/weight limits on my rockets are nowhere near as tight as on an interplanetary probe. I was also impressed with how smoothly they added in the footage of the control room video and images from Mars, If I recall right an article in the Tribune yesterday (Saturday) mentioned that the producers were still waiting to see how the landing turned out, and had left 4 minutes of the show unfinished in order to make the ending as current as possible. I also heard that they would have updated images on the Tuesday showing, Well I guess I'll have to set the VCR since I'll be at work. This sure has been exciting!! Howard

Howard, you may enjoy reading "Managing Martians", by Donna Shirley, Project manager for the Sojourner rover. It is highly autobiographical, but Shirley also describes in some detail some of the engineering problems her team encountered. I also caught a segment of a recent interview with her on PBS recently, sorry but I couldn't watch long enough to get the title of the show and darned if I can recall the time and day now. Your mention of model rocketry takes me back. There is a b&w photo in my shop taken by a high-school friend, of me in a crowd of other participants on the flight-line, preparing my "boost-glider" rocket for a competition at Brighton High in the mid-seventies. I took third place, not bad since the competition was also the first powered test flight! The hobby today is mind-boggling, a lifetime away from the Estes & Centurion world. The model rockets being launched today look like DOD projects! C. --- Howard Jackman <sumoetx@yahoo.com> wrote:
