RE: [Utah-astronomy] Forbidden Planet
I rented Forbidden Planet last year after a discussion on this newsgroup about old sci-fi films, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. The idea behind the story was not original (there are many variations on that theme), but I thought it was told very well, with enough new spins to make it interesting. Aaron

One of my earliest memories is of seeing Forbidden Planet - I was two years old when it was released. Dr. Morbius's invisible mind creature gave me nightmares for weeks. (What were my parents thinking???) It's still one of my favorites.

Doesn't part of the theme relate to The Tempest? I thought I read that somewhere ... Anyway, I enjoyed it except where the tiger gets zapped. -- Joe

Yes, it is based on Shakespeare's The Tempest. Morbius is Prospero Altaira is Miranda The "Monster from the Id" is Caliban It was notable for a number of other reasons: 1) the first use in a movie of the newly created precursor to the Moog synthesiser. It's a pretty radical score for 1956. 2) it established character elements used in most subsequent space travel sci-fi movies and TV shows that followed, e.g Star Trek - a) a close knit bridge crew of 4 characters with distinct personality traits. b) the "loveable" robot who wants to be human or is nearly human. c) the hand-held "communicator". d) the hand-held "phaser". - not to mention that great phrase "Monsters from the Id". - Canopus56 (Kurt) --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

I think the Museum of Natural History is looking for science /scifi movies for their Science Movie Night series this year. Anyone here know Forbidden Planet well enough to conduct a discussion about it following a screening? I think the screening and discussion would be held in the main library downtown. Patrick
