Allow me to add my 2c as an observer to this issue. I will start out by clarifying that I personally have no issue with Siegfried. From my perspective, Siegfried made a couple attempts at a humorous response to some requests for information. There is nothing inherently wrong with this. There are several people on this list who regularly make some very humorous posts and I think most (if not all) the members on this list appreciate them. It was pointed out that the people requesting the information really wanted it for some valid reasons. Siegfried interpreted these as personal attacks. As the discussion developed, some of them probably were, but I do not believe that is important now. If Sig had just swallowed his pride, admitted that he was a little out of line (although unintentionally), and offered the requested information all would have been well. Instead, Sig inexplicably picked up all his toys and went to play elsewhere. I think it is safe to say that we are all adults here and it is likely that nobody will hold a grudge over something so silly. He is certainly welcome back on the forum, but that is his choice. I do not see how it is our place to "beg" him to come back in private emails. If he is interested he will return, otherwise he won't. If he does decide to return, I think it would be wise to make a brief statement of contrition at least to those involved the little spat to patch things up, with a vow to try to be more helpful in offering information in the future. I don't particularly care whether he does this publicly (for all to read) or via email to a select few (like I said, I hold no ill feelings). Even those involved (Rich, for example) seem to hold the same thoughts I do (no ill will, just a desire for info). This forum is a place for him to shine as the SLAS president. He should be on here offering up information on current happenings and such, so I hope he does come back. But that is his choice. Aaron

Since I'm the big bad ogre that started the whole thing, apologies first to the list.
But as I stated earlier, I harbor no ill will towards Siegfried. These days I'm just too darn busy, and too strapped for cash, to make 2 hour round trips to SLC if nothing of significance is planned for a meeting, that's all.
I did volunteer to find a speaker, off-list, but never heard back, so I guess maybe I'm the one HE's mad at...
I promise to behave in the future. Pass this along next time you see him.

I told him that while I do think that some folks here (including me) did not see the humor in his postings about meeting content I can't imagine that any would want him to leave the list permanently.
If you agree you might want to email him off list at

Whoa, Aaron, that's a HUGE assumption. I am an adult chronologically only (and assuming that I've been appreciably below the speed of light for most of my life). ;) I've heard from Siegfried and he is not interested in returning to the list at present, though several folks have asked him off-list to return. Time heals all wounds, no matter what your velocity relative to the percieved insult. C. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Me. Greetings, fellow list members. My name is Michael Kwan (Mike) and I joined this list last weekend. I have been lurking in the background for the past few days to get a sense of who the list members are, the list etiquette and the current discussion topics. After reading the many and varied posts, I am struck with two impressions: 1) Holy Cr*p! How am I going to keep up with all of these email messages! (As I turn ON daily digest mode) 2) I'm clearly in over my head . . . I have been interested in "Space" since I was a child. Please do not take this as an assertion that I know anything about astronomy. My level of expertise in this field seems to extend to the fact that if I'm looking and see my feet, I know I'm not looking in the right direction. Nonetheless, I am committed to learning more about the universe for several reasons. First, I know that my religious faith, while comforting at times, does not provide satisfactory answers to some big, important questions in life. Second, I KNOW there must be intelligent life "out there" somewhere because, as Mr. Idle would say, there's very little of it here on Earth (the present list members excepted). Lastly, what we know about the universe is miniscule, what we know we don't know about the universe is vast, and what we don't know we don't know about the universe is, well, nearly infinite. It seems like a pastime that will keep me occupied for a long time. (Of course, time is relative . . .) As to current discussions on the list: Tempel 1 - Despite all of the hype, it was cool. The temerity to imagine that we could find, let alone hit something so far away makes that (faked) LeBron James commercial seem like a walk in the park. Maybe it wasn't as spectacular as some had been led to believe, but the technical achievement of colliding with the comet is remarkable. In addition, I understand that the "science" of analyzing the debris and impact crater may provide us with additional insights about the origins of our universe. "Siegfried" - I missed the prior thread that may or may not have caused the bad feelings. I gather that he is the current President of SLAS and I assume would be in a position to offer valuable information. Relativity - okay, really, . . . is this any kind of topic to spring on a new member? Talk about DEEP thinking! My brain hurts! I will offer this small bit of evidence that Einstein was right about time being relative: The phrase "I'll be ready in a minute" means entirely different things to me, my wife and my kids! I will endeavor to keep up with frantic pace of posting that goes on here. I can obviously learn a lot about this topic from you folks. Mike
Welcome, Mike! I hope you find what you are looking for among the postings of our distinguished members. And the incoherent ramblings of the rest of us, too. What is a LeBron James? C. --- Michael Kwan <mwkwan@sisna.com> wrote:

He is a professional basketball player who shot a commercial with him shooting and making four or five consecutive full court baskets after drinking some sort of soft drink. The commercial was faked (as far as him making the shots), but some people thought that he was actually shooting and making the shots. I think the best approach whenever there's a dispute is just to forget it and move on. Life really is too short to worry about comments or jokes for very long. This news list is for discussion and information sharing, and we should just dump any hurt feelings. Personally, I'm always happy to see folks joining in our talk, like discussions around the dinner table. Sometimes at home we snap at each other, but it really doesn't mean anything. -- Best wishes to all, Joe
That was well said and I agree. I think club members have the right to know what the meeting is about before they get to the meeting. Like it's been said, the meetings are a long drive for many people, additionally people are taking time away from their families and sometimes rearranging their schedules to accomodate the meeting. It just seems courteous to me to let people know in advance what the meeting is going to be about. It's so easy for the president or another board member to post the meeting details on the website calendar within the details of the meeting entries that are already set up on the calendar. It would take maybe 5 minutes tops to do that and probably 2 minutes tops to post it here. It doesn't seem to me like it's too much to ask.
