With Mars just about at opposition, I noticed how much brighter it is this morning, compared to the last few months. I'm hoping SPOC opens up soon, in time to get some good views of the Red Planet while it's at it's closest.

Nothing in my post that could possibly start another internet rumor, Rodger, no worries. Besides, the current one will be re-surfacing long after we have departed this world. BTW, that whole thing is the result of the OP not knowing the difference between minutes of arc, and seconds of arc. Just goes to show that a little ignorance goes a long way. Mars is fascinating to observe. One of my favorite planetary targets, when the opportunity presents itself. On Thu, Feb 23, 2012 at 2:23 PM, Rodger C. Fry <rcfry@comcast.net> wrote:

There's so much work to be done on the Refractor House I can't say for sure when it will open. One of the things to be discussed at the SPOC meeting this Saturday (open to all) is SPOC work parties. Hopefully we can get enough people involved in those to at least get the major issues corrected quickly. But hopefully the other two SPOC scopes will be on line next month. And there's always the U's observatory on the roof of South Physics. Open every clear Wednesday evening starting at sunset. patrick On 23 Feb 2012, at 06:22, Chuck Hards wrote:

If I don't have to work, count me in for a cleanup crew this year. Be sure to let me know when the work is scheduled, if I can't make the SPOC meeting. I have a trimmer and mower, as well as a small chipper available. And lots of garbage bags as well as a paint roller. (Denny's. Ugh. When is the board going to start meeting at Hooters? OK, don't send hate mail. I'd settle for VI over Denny's. But Hooters would be nice...) ;-) On Thu, Feb 23, 2012 at 2:33 PM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>wrote:

They do make a good buffalo chicken sandwich. Or so I've heard. I'd be up for helping out at SPOC as time permits too--I'd need at least a few days advance notice. Don't know what needs to be done, but I've got a selection of air and hand tools, drywall finishing stuff, carpet laying stuff, electrical stuff (GFCI testers, cable pullers, etc). Hopefully that will not be a problem as I think (hope) we'll get them scheduled at Saturday's meeting for sometime in March. patrick
Chuck, you are my kind of guy (there are celestial orbs, and there are orbs). BTW, I can help w/the cleanup, as long as I do not need to move over 6" in any direction 12" OK in a chair w/casters), handle more than a medium plate of ribs, and lift more than a can of diet coke. I am also pretty good on giving advice, whether desired or not.... I have a pretty heavy duty shop vac, a good Fluke meter, but a mostly empty tool box (see Dan, haha), as well as an assortment of shovels, rakes, brooms, axe, sledge, etc., all with very, very, little use! At least from my perspective, very high on the list of priorities is finding and sealing the leaks in the Refractor House dome. My thought is to have someone on the outside with a water hose spraying the exterior and others inside on ladders watching for the leaks. Once found, we remove the old sealant and fill the gap with new stuff. Once that's accomplished it'll be a quick and simple matter to get the refractor reinstalled and operational. Additional things include getting the Lunar Quadrant charts (which Mark so generously framed) hung along with Kelly Rick's donated plaque. patrick On 23 Feb 2012, at 16:19, Chuck Hards wrote:

It might last longer if the caulk was applied from the outside/in rather than the inside/out.....Aloha & 73, lh On 2/23/2012 7:54 PM, Patrick Wiggins wrote:

Yep, that's the plan. Cheers, patrick On 24 Feb 2012, at 01:51, Larry Holmes wrote:

Just don't blame the architect for any leaks. He's too broke to bear any legal expenses. And I'm sorry I won't be able to help with maintenance, but I hope y'all will excuse me because of the 600 miles of driving I'd have to do to be there. I can't picture the width of joints in the dome, but if they are greater than an eighth-inch or so, a backer rod should be used with a good quality sealant. Just filling gaps with a lot of sealant won't cut it. At least that's my professional advice. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the use of a backer rod, here's a link to a manufacturer with a couple of drawings: http://www.bestmaterials.com/Backer_Rod.aspx. Just scroll down past the good looking chic with the hardhat to get to the drawings. FWIW, that's just why I got into the construction industry - all the great looking young women one meets on construction sites. ;-) Kim -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Patrick Wiggins Sent: Thursday, February 23, 2012 7:54 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Mars At least from my perspective, very high on the list of priorities is finding and sealing the leaks in the Refractor House dome.
