Pardon a bit of self horn tooting but I'm feeling rather jazzed at the moment and thought I'd share with y'all. I just got word from the Minor Planet Center that an asteroid I've been chasing through the sky the past couple of nights is indeed a new one and has been given the temporary designation K07V08N. It'll probably be a couple of years before I'll be able to submit a name but it's just nice to know that even an amateur can still discover a new asteroid. BTW, regarding the name, 8 years ago I worked a deal with KCPW during one of their pledge drives to give the naming rights to my next find to the highest bidder. Some guy actually bid and then paid $500! Now I just hope I can find him... Clear skies! patrick

CONGRATS Patrick!!! I love it when someone puts in the effort and gets rewarded with a find. Way to go Patrick! Thanks. Now if I could just get my images to look as nice as your. BTW, I recently added VBRI filters to my toy box. Officially they're for my variable star work but Cindy and Jerry Foote showed me that the VBRs can be used in place of RGBs for taking color pictures. So now we just need to get you to run an imaging seminar out at SPOC next spring (hint-hint). patrick
Patrick, I would be happy to run an imaging seminar.... if anyone is interested. But, as you know, the data collection part is pretty uneventful (frame, focus, start the guider, start the camera, and wait for hours!). To make it interesting, we would probably need to simply cover the basics of data collection and then spend most of the time on processing. If there is enough interest, it might be fun to try. Glad to hear you are interested. What I have in mind would be part one at SPOC covering basics like how the camera is attached to the scope, wired to the computer, focused and operated. We could also take a few simple pictures. Part 2 could be held anywhere and could use data collected before to demonstrate how pictures are put together and made to look nice. 'Course I've tried putting such a class together before and while folks have expressed interest we never seem to get enough folks to actually sign up to make it worthwhile. Still, it's a long time until spring. Let's see if we can stir up some interest. In the mean time, I just peered out through my blackout curtains and found it's getting light out. Time to turn in. patrick On 07 Nov 2007, at 06:36, Tyler Allred wrote:

Thanks Howard,
I'm hoping my success might spur others here to give astro research a try (just as Tyler and others have inspired me to occasionally try "pretty pictures").

Ah yes, money... I can relate to that. Well there's always SPOC. Bigger scopes than I'm using, a CCD camera, all the needed software and all just sitting there waiting to be used.
True Patrick, I should be using that seeing as how I do pay my dues. Did I forget to mention the lack of time?! Work and kids makes it tough to get out to SPOC for training classes and even star parties...A new years resolution has been set-use SPOC!! Howard P.S. The Horsehead looks great!! when are you going to go color? --- Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

Thanks. Still not Tyler quality but as Joe pointed out on the phone this evening I am using a much longer focal length. As for color, well I've always been a big fan of Ansel Adams. I just like the look and feel of B&W. Plus there's the fact that color requires a whole lot more work. And I really do enjoy doing real science. But I must admit that I do like some of the color stuff I've seen over the years and now that I've got the necessary equipment I may have to give it a go. patrick
Patrick you're a kindred spirit! I'm a huge B/W fan drives my wife nuts when I start altering the pictures into black and white. Keep up the hard work, you make utah astronomy look good! Howard --- Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:
