Re: [Utah-astronomy] Weekend observing
Well, conditions were decent until around 20 minutes ago when clouds from the SW came streaming in. They rather looked like streamers too. Spent about an hour observing and attempting to sketch Romer and Romer B near the terminator tonight among a few other items that I observed in the nearby area. Made for a fun evening. Conditions are good for open clusters and double stars, and of course for observing along the terminator. If I had my key to the Bogdan and had signed up, it would be a good night to use it for some of these items. Thought of making a private viewing party at SPOC but probably too late. Anyone game for a few hours, give me a call or post. I'd come out for practice on the Bogdan or even the Ealing.

Hi Joe, I just stayed in Herriman. On moon nights Herriman is about as good as SPOC so just stayed local. I can do the backyard or I have a location that is only about 10 minutes from my home that is decent for a place in the valley. If the weather was good over the next several days I'd so some more double and lunar work but I think I'm done til last quarter also. It now looks like this cloudy, wet spell won't let-up until next Wednesday or Thursday, meaning bright moon time. Planets, double stars, and narrow-band imaging time. An exception to the visual deep-sky washout is planetary nebulae. You can still get some good views of most of them with narrow-band filters, even on full moon nights.
I just found precisely one inch of rain in the rain gague (25mm). That's a 24-hour total for my West Valley location, and it took me by surprise. It must have just dumped after I went to bed last night.

I'm having trouble reaching Prez Dave (nothing unusual there) to confirm that a speaker is needed for next month. It rained steadily for over 1 hour at my house with periods of very heavy rain.
I just found precisely one inch of rain in the rain gague (25mm).
That's a 24-hour total for my West Valley location, and it took me by surprise. It must have just dumped after I went to bed last night.

Hi Joe, It looks like the articles are still available on the Weber State physics website. Here are the links: http://physics.weber.edu/palen/oas/Newsletter/Mar01.htm http://physics.weber.edu/palen/oas/Newsletter/Apr01.htm You (and others) are certainly welcome to come and visit the observatory if you happen to find yourselves in Cache Valley some time. I only ask that you bring clear skies with you. If you'd like I could give you the address off-list. Of course, you'll have my address as soon as I get my SLAS dues check to you. <g> BTW - there are also other "cheaper" RA options such as Radio Jove, meteor counts (i.e. like Kurt), space weather, etc. that people can pursue. Clear skies, Dale. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Joe Bauman Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2010 11:31 AM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Radio Astronomy (was Weekend observing) Yes, I'd like to see it! I don't have it here at work so I'd have to send it later. There are also some slightly older OAS Star Diagonals that have a couple articles I wrote about the radio telescope. Those articles are just a bit dated now because I've switched receivers. I'll find the links to the online files. As Chuck mentioned - you certainly don't see pretty pictures show up on the screen. But, there is some interesting stuff to be found in the data. I'm going to be getting a sweet deal on a loop Yagi antenna from a guy in Canada. I'll be using that along with my dish and I hope to try my hand at some interferometry over the coming year.
