So far, down here in St. George, it looks as if the weather is going to cooperate for the upcoming Jupiter event. The forecast for the Salt Lake area doesn’t look too bad either. I’m still trying to decide what camera setup would be the best. Hopefully, you guys that know what you’re doing will get some great shots you can share with the rest of us. Dave
Even if the weather cooperates up here, it's not a sure thing that I'll image this due to having to get up at 3:30 AM that morning. If I don't get a nap after work, there's simply no way I'll be able to keep my eyes open. But if the stars all align, I was planning on shooting my JVC hi-def camcorder with the 100mm ED refractor, and the DSLR with the C-6, both in tandem on the CGEM mount. I'll be shooting video with both, getting as many frames as possible to construct images and animations with. Weather may be good but seeing is another thing entirely. A steady atmosphere will mean a higher percentage of usable frames. Jupiter rotates quickly so you can't stack frames taken at intervals longer than a few minutes. Anyway that's the plan. Mother Nature may turn me into Rip Van Winkle instead. On Wed, Jan 21, 2015 at 3:56 AM, Dave Gary <davegary@me.com> wrote:

I have exactly the same problem….with work, that is. However, I don’t have to get up until 05:00 on the Saturday and Sunday I’m scheduled to work. I get to sleep in, I guess. That Sand Man guy gets around. I’m afraid I may have to deal with him, too. Hopefully, he’ll pester you so much that he forgets all about me. Good luck. Sounds like you’ve got the setup all figured out. Dave On Jan 21, 2015, at 5:17, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

How obvious will the shadows be? The three moons are beautiful all lined up towards us in 3D. But I'm not sure I will be able to see shadows. Air is not very still. I have an old 10" sct, 15mm eyepiece. Dion

The air should steady as the night progresses. The shadows will be obvious. On Jan 23, 2015 9:44 PM, "Dion Davidson via Utah-Astronomy" < utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:

The shadows should be pretty easy to see with your SCT. I can see the shadow of Callisto pretty easily with my 8" refractor at 165X and 300X. 300X is just a bit beyond the seeing limit. The seeing is moderately good here. On Friday, January 23, 2015 9:44 PM, Dion Davidson via Utah-Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> wrote: How obvious will the shadows be? The shadows should be pretty easy to see with your SCT. I can see the shadow of Callisto pretty easily with my 8" refractor at 165X and 300X. 300X is just a bit beyond the seeing limit. The seeing is moderately good here.

You should not be seeing a third shadow. There are only two. You may be mistaking Callisto, which is dark against Jupiter, as the third shadow. Only Callisto's and Europa's shadows are on Jupiter. Io's shadow is long gone. On Jan 23, 2015 11:36 PM, "Dion Davidson via Utah-Astronomy" < utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:

Ignore that last. I was just reading posts. Looks like I sent a reply by mistake. But now that I'm here it's nice to see that for once I'm not the only one up at this hour doing astronomy. :) Anyone get pictures of the Jupiter events? patrick On 24 Jan 2015, at 00:15, Wiggins Patrick <paw@getbeehive.net> wrote:

I'm stacking some, now. I don't think I got three moons, only two of them. My images with three moons are too blurry to make out. Bummer. I will plod ahead. Dave
It's way too late to suggest eyepiece projection. The problem was Jupiter's image was too small to see any detail. This is a time when the eye certainly beat out the camera! It was surprising to see all three shadows pass between the two main atmospheric bands. So far no actual images of the event have been posted on the internet, although Griffith Observatory has a cool simulation. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Gary" <davegary@me.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Saturday, January 24, 2015 8:06:56 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Jupiter Event I'm stacking some, now. Both Griffith and Mt. Wilson were streaming it, Joan, but the seeing was awful.
