I am glad to hear this, Steve. Someone should get the museum to correct their publicity. Thanks, Joe ------------------------------ On Wed, May 23, 2012 8:56 AM MDT Steve Fisher wrote:

Utah Astronomers! To be clear. You and your friends, family and those you invite will not have to pay the admission price to the museum to observe through SLAS scopes. The majority of our scopes, the SLAS booth and the majority of our presentation will be in free areas of the museum.
SLAS will be giving away 6 telescopes, books, and other door prize type items and you and the general public will not need pay admission to enter those drawings and win those items. We have at least one radio station that will be there inviting the public to come up and take a safe look. More details later.

Thanks Joe! I will talk to my contact today. As stated other places, the museum would like to encourage people to pay and see the museum. They have to promote that but should be able to find a way to be clear on both points. It seems hard to do now days with the written word. (preaching to the choir)

There's going to be transit viewing at the Brickyard, too? NHMU, Brickyard, Gateway, Sandy... Any others? I'd like to make sure we promote _all_ the free public viewing opportunities for the transit on our website and Facebook pages. Jaw-dropping factoid of the day: Our website had _25,000_ unique visits on Sunday, with an average dwell time on our various articles about the eclipse of nearly four minutes. That's incredible. Hi Seth, I'll have 7 telescopes set up at the Northridge High School observatory in Layton. NHS is about 1 mile north of the Layton Hills Mall on Hillfield Road or a quarter mile south of the Hill Field AFB south entrance. During the eclipse Sunday, we had about 120 people come. One of the most popular things I did was to project the eclipse image onto a piece of white paper taped to the side of the observatory. Lots of people took pictures of that projection. Hi Brent, Not only do I remember it, I tell every class and workshop about it when we do solar observing. I also like to show them how a dry leaf bursts in to flame when held near the eyepiece of a telescope pointed at the Sun. They always remember the burning leaf demo! ("Do it again! Do it again! No, smoke gets on the eyepiece.") By the way, Brent, I keep running into our "Iomega Telescopes" at schools I visit. One was donated to the observatory last year. I have the one from Morgan Elementary (now at Burton Elementary) in my garage for repairs. If I have time this summer, I might try tracking them all down just to see how many are still being used. I still have the records we kept of teachers and schools. What great memories of those days! I figure we built somewhere around 320 of those 6 inch f10's. I always quote the number of 350 for the telescopes we placed. Some of them we bought from Coulter Optical - 8 inchers. Most went to Davis and Salt Lake county schools. I think the number is pretty good. Indeed, those were the days. ________________________________ From: Wayne Sumner <WSUMNER@dsdmail.net> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 23, 2012 6:26 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Admission Price NHMU Hi Brent, Not only do I remember it, I tell every class and workshop about it when we do solar observing. Jaw-dropping factoid of the day: Our website had _25,000_ unique visits on Sunday, with an average dwell time on our various articles about the eclipse of nearly four minutes. That's incredible. The public is hungry for this stuff - we should feed them! Thanks Joe! I will talk to my contact today. As stated other places, the museum would like to encourage people to pay and see the museum. They have to promote that but should be able to find a way to be clear on both points. It seems hard to do now days with the written word. I am glad to hear this, Steve. Someone should get the museum to correct their publicity. Thanks, Joe

Utah Astronomers! To be clear. You and your friends, family and those you invite will not have to pay the admission price to
the
museum to observe through SLAS scopes.

Turnout for Sunday's eclipse the Gateway, Library Square, and especially the Sandy location was _extremely_ strong and we had many people ask if we were hosting similar events for the transit. We of course said yes. Clark Planetarium staff and telescopes will be at the Gateway next to the Olympic Fountain, and in Sandy at the Dimple Dell Recreation Center (106th So. 10th E.) from 4PM-sunset on 6/5 to offer the public free viewing of the transit. We could use a couple more telescopes and operators, especially at the Sandy location. I know a lot of folks here will be headed for the NHMU, which is a terrific spot to view the transit, but in case any of you folks would like to share the view with interested crowds at other locations we'd love to have you join us either at the Gateway or in Sandy. If you think you'd like to participate, please let me know. We've got an opportunity to capitalize on the momentum Sunday's eclipse created and get more of the public interested in astronomy. And btw, we're getting a large order of Aluminized Mylar solar viewing glasses delivered in time for the transit. They provide a color-free, very crisp image of the Sun which will be perfect for zero magnification transit viewing. I've experimented with taking a set of filters part and turning them into solar filters for 35mm and 50mm binoculars, and they work beautifully. Just use a bit of black vinyl electricians tape to cover any gaps between the filters and the objectives.
