Clearing skies - Comet Tuttle and Holmes
The IR sat image is showing some clearing skies tonight. Internet scuttle butt is that both Comet 8P Tuttle and Comet Holmes are visible in 10x50 binos. May be worth a quick peak between imbibes tonight. 8P Finder chart at: http://gallery.utahastronomy.com/v/kurt/utahastrowiki/055.PNG.html and http://www.utahastronomy.com/Current_observing_events Uber imager Pete Lawrence's image of Comet 8P approaching M33: http://www.digitalsky.org.uk/comets/2007-12-30_Tuttle+M33_IMG_5567.jpg Clear skies and HNY - Kurt _______________________________________________ Sent via CSolutions - http://www.csolutions.net
Tuttle has brightened considerably since last I imaged it while Holmes is but a shadow of its former self (though one needs to remember that when Holmes dramatically brightened in the 1890s it did it again a couple of months later so maybe it'll do it again this time). Side-by-side of pictures I took a few minutes ago with a 1 minute exposure of Tuttle on the left and a 5 minute exposure of Holmes on the right. Both unguided with C-14 @ f/11 and ST-10 binned 3x3 and chilled to -25. http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/TUTTLEHOLMES.JPG The vertical stripe is an artifact of the camera that I didn't bother to fix since the pictures are not keepers. patrick On 31 Dec 2007, at 15:54, Kurt Fisher wrote:

Keep the Holmes photo, Patrick, just for comparison purposes -- especially if it does flare again. Also, wasn't Tuttle supposed to pass in front of, or near, M-33? Or was that another comet? Looks like Chuck holds the distinction of being the last to post to UA for 2007 and Joe is first for 2008. On 01 Jan 2008, at 00:27, Joe Bauman wrote:

Ok, I'll keep it online for a while and we'll see what happens with Holmes.

'Twas Tuttle alright. Alas, it happened Sunday when it was, of course, cloudy here. I found a few pictures at: http://www.spaceweather.com/comets/gallery_tuttle_page4.htm Many more pictures out there. Google "tuttle m33". patrick p.s. Currently just over 4 hours into an all night imaging run of (90) Antiope that started in 2007 and will end in 2008.

Hey, whatdya know, my plain, old unassisted eyes informed me of the clear sky, too! *;o)* I'll be taking out the 15x70mm until my teeth start chattering... On Dec 31, 2007 3:54 PM, Kurt Fisher <fisherka@csolutions.net> wrote:

Speaking of field curvature from the other thread, these popular 15x70mm binos have noticeable field curvature. The same eyepiece test I described works in binoculars as well. Try it tonight on a suitable terrestrial target if you take a peek at the sky with a bino. Fortunately it's not very noticeable unless you're specifically looking for it.

Yeah, it really is a great night tonight.

If it helps you to keep warm, think of the email I received earlier from a friend that lives near Perth, Australia. She and her family had just returned from a hot day at the beach... :) patrick
