Jupiter triple shadow transits
I remember observing the last triple shadow transit on Jupiter from SPOC in March, 2004. We had clear weather, and though it was cold, it was worth the effort to see it. I think that SLAS billed it as a public event, but I don’t remember. I see that there are three events coming up: 12 Oct 2013, 4:31 UT 3 Jun 2014, 19:02 UT 24 Jan 2015, 6:27 UT. The next triple shadow transit after the January 2015 event isn’t until 2032. Unfortunately it appears that only the January 2015 event will be visible from Utah. (Someone else please check your planetarium software to see if I’ve made any errors.) I know some of you may not get that excited about a triple shadow transit, but for anyone who hasn’t seen it, I recommend that you add it to your astronomical bucket list. I certainly thought that it was one of my observing highlights.
Kim, will you please remind us before the one later in the year? Thanks, Joe ________________________________ From: Kim Hyatt <kimharch@cut.net> To: 'Utah Astronomy' <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Monday, May 13, 2013 10:46 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Jupiter triple shadow transits I remember observing the last triple shadow transit on Jupiter from SPOC in March, 2004. Someone care to check my calculations? I show that on 12 October 2013 at 0431 UT Jupiter will be below the horizon from here in Utah. patrick On 13 May 2013, at 23:20, Joe Bauman wrote:

19:02 UT makes the time 1:02 pm MDT, doesn't it? So we won't see the June 2014 transit, either. However, it might be interesting to try and see Jupiter in the daytime. The January 2015 transit is the most promising. Jupiter is high in the sky and all we have to do is hope for good weather. Where will the first two be visible? It might make sense to do a road trip. Brent and Siegfried, I haven't had the time to do that research and since I'm preparing for an assignment in Vicksburg for the next couple of weeks I probably won't have time to look into it for awhile. If someone else wants to do so, great - I'd also like to know. Otherwise I'll try it work on it while I'm away. It's just a matter of locating a site where Jupiter is high enough (20 degrees? 30?) during nighttime hours. I doubt that I will be able to afford that kind of travel, but it's worth it to check it out. At first look, the 2013 triple shadow event will be 20 degrees above the horizon in Omaha, NE. The 2014 event is not visible from the US. The 2015 event is 60 degrees above the southeast horizon from Salt Lake City. Anyone else care to corroborate these positions?
