If the scope or binocular you plan to observe the sun with is such that your face is also turned toward the sun, or within 90-degrees of it, cut out a round shade from cardboard, and slip it over the tube of the telescope, or cut two holes in the case of a binocular, and slip it over the front of the binos. Your face will then be in shade as you look through the eyepiece(s). Make the shade large enough to shadow your entire face and head, and then a little more. On binoculars, you can cut a little window in the upper portion, and tape some Mylar over it. Then you can get the naked-eye view just before and after the magnified view.
