Last evening the Moon passed first quarter. It should be slightly past 1st quarter and visible - assuming the current storm low clears. When the Moon is at first quarter near its 90 degree phase angle, it is in it's Earth-trailing position. The Moon is within 6 degrees of the ecliptic. Thus, when you look at the first quarter Moon it is marking the approximate location of the trailing path that the Earth follows in its revolution around the Sun.
