Aurora Tuesday Night
With the large Solar Mass Ejection that occurred on Sunday, is anyone planning to go out and look for the Aurora on Tuesday night? I would like to consider this. Thanks Rodger Fry
I am interested. I saw one a few years ago and it was an incredible experience. I saw it from just beyound Little Mountain. -A On Mon, Aug 2, 2010 at 7:16 PM, Rodger C. Fry <rcfry@comcast.net> wrote:

Rodger and Ann, I am willing to give it a go. What time and where? Would higher up be a better location with less air to see through or the Western Desert where you can see more on the horizon? Lakeside or the mountains? On Tue, Aug 3, 2010 at 11:05 AM, Ann House <ann@annhouse.org> wrote:

Knolls has had good weather even when the city and Lakeside have not. I went out last night for a few hours, and even though there was lightning from all directions, the skies over Knolls were clear and transparent. I'd recommend that as a place to head. Incidentally, I finally managed NGC 147 last night. I first glimpsed it at 75x, then rolled back to 30x and could see it. Also got NGC 6118 in Serpens, so it was a good night for tough targets. Unless the auroral oval is just huge and covers the whole sky from our latitude, find a location with a dark northern sky. Big Mountain is good, though not a very low horizon. Lakeside is excellent all-around. On 8/3/10, Michael Vanopstall <opstall@math.utah.edu> wrote:

Anyone good to go? I may have to go and have a lease signed for a property we are renting out but other than that I'm good to go. I'll probably take the 14" out if we go to do some observing and then a chair to sit in to watch the Aurora. On Tue, Aug 3, 2010 at 2:26 PM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

My view that one time from Big Mountain was very adequate, but I am game for trying out another site. Where is Lakeside? -A On Tue, Aug 3, 2010 at 3:21 PM, Steve FISHER <sfisher01@msn.com> wrote:
I should have mentioned, I'm thinking Lakeside. Quick drive, no canyons, nice dark Northern horizon. Steve

I have been thinking about driving out. No scope tonight but I may head out to the Lakeside site later this evening. Maybe we will see you there. Steve

Unless the auroral oval is just huge and covers the whole sky from our latitude, find a location with a dark northern sky. Big Mountain is good, though not a very low horizon. Lakeside is excellent all-around.

Knolls has had good weather even when the city and Lakeside have
not. I
went out last night for a few hours, and even though there was lightning from all directions, the skies over Knolls were clear and transparent. I'd recommend that as a place to head. Incidentally, I finally managed NGC 147 last night. I first glimpsed it at 75x, then rolled back to 30x and could see it. Also got NGC 6118 in Serpens, so it was a good night for tough targets.

Rodger and Ann,
I am willing to give it a go. What time and where? Would higher up be a better location with less air to see through or the Western Desert where you can see more on the horizon? Lakeside or the mountains?

Here is a map to the Lakeside site: http://slas.us/maps/lakeside.htm If folks are headed out that way tonight I'd suggest meeting at the Flying J just off I-80's exit 99 (the SPOC exit) at 10:00 pm and going as a group from there. If anyone is interested in such a trip please post here so we'll all know who to expect. patrick
Jay, I am going to be putting on a private star party for a friend's family reunion in Brighton tonight. After that, I am toying around with the idea of finding a dark spot to try and view the Aurora. I think that Lakeside would be a good choice but I am not sure. If I know that others are going out, I might join in. I know that Ann House has also expressed interest.
