Yes, I know, weather is iffy, but we've decided to go for it anyway. Probably be looking through sucker holes, but this is perhaps the only chance we'll get this semester. If you are interested in helping out, we will be at Big Springs Park in Provo's South Fork Canyon. Call me if you need directions up there 801~380~3331 Sunset is about 7pm; I'm planning to be up there by 6:30. TIA, Rich
A big 'thank you!' to those who helped out Friday night -- a very successful and fun event, with a huge turnout (3 Timpview HS astronomy classes and their friends and family). A good portion of the sky was clear through midnight over the park -- I love it when that happens! /R
There is a huge cloud mass over Utah right now but it should be gone in the next few hours, looking at the satellite animation. On 10/8/10, M Wilson <astro_outwest@yahoo.com> wrote:

In their discussion of the local forecasts located at http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecasts/display_special_product_versions.php?sid=s... NWS : HAVE UPDATED THE SKY FORECASTS OVER NORTHERN AREAS THIS MORNING FOR MORE CLOUDS AND OVER SOUTHERN AREAS FOR LESS CLOUDS. A FEW MINOR TWEAKS WERE MADE FOR THIS AFTERNOON AS WELL. THE REST OF THE FORECAST PACKAGE LOOKS IN GOOD SHAPE FOR TODAY AND TONIGHT AS A DIRTY RIDGE BUILDS IN OVERHEAD. TONIGHT...PARTLY CLOUDY. LOWS IN THE MID 40S. Warning: Humidity is forecasted as HIGH tonight so if you have a dob, no biggie but it impacts the view. SCT or Refractor, have dew heaters going. I'm in a wait and see mode for the next 3 hours to see what the Satellite actually does. Then again, as of Wednesday I'm off for 3 1/2 weeks so plenty of time to observe minus a trip to the Bay Area to visit my mother who was diagnosed recently with cancer. I shot this last night from Southern UT. Ran into some camera issues and didn't have a whole lot of time to shoot darks by the time I figured out what was wrong. 3 hours of fiddling around to discover a bad usb cable :/ This is also the first image I have ever Dithered. It really increases the quality and drops the noise down a lot. Never again will I not dither! http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=3863&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 I used dither master, works with phd guiding. Cheers, David

I think I will get one more night, tonight, before I call it quits. I got this one last night along with the Bubble Nebula - processing it now. http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=3902&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 Enjoy!
Alright, this is probably the last image for the trip. Sorry I have been over running the list with emails :) Bubble Nebula: http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=3905&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 Didnt spend a whole lot of time on this one. Enjoy! David

Nice work. Well guided, rich color and tiny, pinpointy stars.
Sorry I have been over running the list with emails :)
No need to apologize. Much better than a drawn out discussion on climate change or creationism. :) patrick
LoL, Thanks Patrick - that is reassuring. Cheers, On 10/12/10 1:22 PM, Patrick Wiggins wrote:

Hey Don, the Dither Master instructions are in Italian but I used a few translation programs on the Internet and managed to get something I think I can understand. I'm not sure if the one you got is the same as the one I did; Nicola said the one I downloaded -- MAXPhd Dither Plus -- is to use with MaxIM and PHD. Here are the instructions as best as I can get them translated: Translation mostly by Google, with some smoothing by me: Manual MaxPHD DitherPlus 1.0 1.0 Purpose of the program: software designed to use the program known Maxim DL for the resumption [acquisition?] of deep sky objects, using PHD Guiding software as a guider. The purpose of the program is to use the technique of dithering in the recovery [acquisition?] phase, in automated form. Dithering is a technique for recovery that is to move randomly in the recovery plan so that the sensor faults and defects related to the recovery debayerizzazione [in color matrix] images from color cameras is minimized. Running DitherPlus You launch DitherPlus by double-clicking its name. At this point the DitherPlus window appears, where you can enter some parameters that will serve us in the recovery phase. Parameters of DitherPlus "# Frames" Number of frames to be captured. "Exposure (sec.): Exposure time for each frame dither Radius (pixels)" maximum size for the movement of dithering, in pixels "Shooting mode:" Could be, "Luminance", "RGB", "H -alpha. "If you shoot with color cameras (ie cameras with no filter wheel), override this setting. If instead you have a filter wheel, remember to set Maxim DL with filters in the following order: L, R, G, B , H-alpha. The Luminance mode takes a sequence of images with the luminance filter. The H-alpha mode, takes a sequence of images with the H-alpha filter. The RGB mode, takes a sequence 'images for each color channel. Example: If the parameter "# Frames" I put three, and set the RGB mode, run the back edge MaxPHD sequence: R, G, B, R, G, B, R, G, B. So the actual total number of frames included is "# Frames" multiplied by 3. "Dithering Tolerance (pixels)": After dithering, the guide must settle on the normal vibration values it had before the dithering. With this parameter is set by MaxPHD to start a pose when the oscillation of the guide is within + or-the value specified in pixels. "Dithering timeout (sec)": Sometimes, for example, because of seeing, the oscillation after the dithering is not within the parameters that we set. s'istrusce MaxPHD With this setting to start the next pose in any case after a certain period of time. "Guides exposure time (sec): Set here the time Laying in turn set to PHD Guiding. "File prefix": It 's the word that acts as an alphanumeric code of the file names for images that are captured. For example, if I'm taking M42 Luminance mode, I could enter as a file prefix the word "M42_" and then set them will be named: M42_L_1.fit, M42_L_2.fit, etc.. In the right section of the window: "Status": It 's a column that lets you know what MaxPHD is doing at that moment the bottom of the Status section, there is a progress bar that provides visual information of progress ACTIVITY of recovery. These are the operating steps for the proper functioning of MaxPHD: 1) Launch PHD Guiding, all the parameters and start the guider. 2) Run Maxim DL and set all the parameters of recovery [resumption?], except for those times that are set by MaxPHD 3) Run MaxPHD 4) Set parameters MaxPHD 5) Click the Start button 6) Now the part MaxPHD sequence set 7) You can quit MaxPHD at any time by simultaneously pressing the CTRL + ALT + x 8) At the end of the sequence, press the Quit button to exit the program Regarding any requests for improvements or abnormalities, write omega.centauri@gmail.com. Thanks Tyler for your help with the processing - even the little bit I retained from our sessions has helped a lot. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Tyler Allred Sent: Tuesday, October 12, 2010 11:04 AM To: 'Utah Astronomy' Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Images from Kanab What a great group of images Don! Interesting site. I've been wondering how all the forecasts could be so wrong today. Just looking at the cloud trends you could see a huge cloud mass coming down from the north. The forecast model on weather.com just shows it getting worse. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Jay Eads Sent: Saturday, October 09, 2010 1:45 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Saturday night In their discussion of the local forecasts located at http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecasts/display_special_product_versions.php?sid=s lc&pil=afdthe NWS : HAVE UPDATED THE SKY FORECASTS OVER NORTHERN AREAS THIS MORNING FOR MORE CLOUDS AND OVER SOUTHERN AREAS FOR LESS CLOUDS. There is a huge cloud mass over Utah right now but it should be gone in the next few hours, looking at the satellite animation.

I have heard rumors of clear skies this weekend.
It's looking like the weather gods will smile on us Saturday night!
