One of the best sites within an hour's drive of SLC, from the standpoint of dark skies, is the Lakeside site. Wasatch front skyglow is a faint band only a few degrees above the eastern horizon. A short stretch of I-80 is visible from the first couple of miles of the access road, but in practice the traffic is so far away that it's not a problem. Wendover has an insignificant glow above it.
That sounds like it is near my neck of the woods. How can I get there? Directions from I-80 westbound would be appreciated. Thanks!! Mark
Mark, It has been many years since we went to Lakeside, but I'll give you directions to the place we thought was the best out there. We like this spot because it got us off the main rd and out of the way of vehicles that occasionally race down the main road at high speeds. Get off of I-80 eastbound at the Lakeside/Eagle Range exit 62(they may have changed the sign names since 9/11, I have not paid much attention). Go Right (North) about 100 feet to the T in the road. Check your odometer at this point. you will be going approximately 5.25 miles on this road. Take a Left on this road, which follows the freeway for about two tenths of a mile, when it sweeps around a curve to the right and sends you North. When you hit the 5 mile point on your odometer, start looking for a small BLM sign (which was there several years ago) that directs you to a road that goes to the left. The dirt road shows up pretty quickly thereafter, and you go Left on it. Take this about 0.2 miles, and you reach an area on the right that looks like a large turnaround. There is some sort of berm along one side of this area, we have no idea what it is, since we have never been there during daylight. I was scared one night when something crept up on us, and rustled around a lot. A white light emergency was declared, and I discovered that an ambush was in progress and we were about to be severely malled by three or four cattle that, as soon as we turned on our lights, pretended to be totally disinterested us. Good luck, Jo Quoting Mark Hanning-Lee <markhl@prodigy.net>:
